About me

My name is Hélène, I am originally from Brittany, France, and I am a French and Music teacher with over 25 years of teaching experience to all ages and in diverse environments.

My original degrees are in Music and Literature. After falling in love with San Francisco and moving to California, I taught French and Music in French-American schools while pursuing a career as a singer-songwriter. I now specialize in private and group instruction in Los Angeles. My experience includes accent coaching off and on set, translation and interpretation. I believe in the parallels between language and music learning, fostering rapid progress tailored to students' needs. Working with children, adults and colleagues of different backgrounds and cultures, I have learnt to adapt to various publics, develop sound educational plans, and use patience and empathy to relate to my students and enhance their learning. I am looking forward to helping you along on this linguistic and cultural adventure!

My approach

I tailor my approach to my public and the situation, as I know needs will be different whether teaching a group Beginner French, helping an adult at Intermediate level refine their conversational skills, preparing an actor for an audition in French, or supporting a High School student with their course load. My goal is always for my students to feel comfortable and empowered where they are. Whatever the texts used or material involved, I always balance our time between exploring grammatical concepts, growing vocabulary, refining listening skills, and speaking practice. I use written text, audio and video for a well-rounded language experience, as well as various manuals depending on the situation. I favor clear and engaging manuals with a multicultural perspective when needed. Since each person learns differently, I use my experience to adapt my instruction to my students’ needs while making sure they have everything they require to feel confident in achieving their goals.

As a beginner, you’ll build a solid foundation in pronunciation, vocabulary, and grammar, allowing you to start speaking confidently and quickly. We’ll focus on real-life situations, using texts, audio, and video to enhance your language skills. Small Zoom classes mean you’ll receive plenty of individual attention, with interactive learning that ensures you progress. With over 20 years of teaching experience, I bring patience, passion, and a commitment to helping you thrive on your French journey. I love seeing my students grow in confidence, and I hope you’ll join us! You’ll also have access to a digital space where you can find class materials, homework, and notes, and continue connecting with the group. Texts required.

Continuing from French Basics 1, you’ll keep building a solid foundation in pronunciation, vocabulary, and grammar, allowing you to start speaking confidently and quickly. After mastering greetings, adjectives and basics questions in French Basics 1, we’ll dive more deeply into verb conjugations and expand vocabulary, talking about where we live and what we do. We’ll focus on real-life situations, using texts, audio, and video to enhance your language skills. Small Zoom classes mean you’ll receive plenty of individual attention, with interactive learning that ensures you progress.
