Mr. Van Westen's Algebra I

Welcome to Mr. Van Westen’s Math Class

Be Prepared!

Always bring a Pencil and your Notebook

Our goal this year in Algebra I is to reach the Mastered level on the State of Texas Assessment of Academic Readiness End of Course exam, the EOC. This year’s test will be administered May 6; results should be received by May 29.

Our students will be using a graphing calculator on their district and state assessments. So that students get familiar with using a calculator, we recommend they use them as often as possible. I still expect to see their thinking on their papers.

The textbook is available only to students through ClassLink. Your student needs to have a folder for our algebra work and a notebook for taking notes.

In order to meet our goal, students will need to practice their Algebra skills at home. These homework assignments will be listed on my classroom calendar and most will be available for download there. I keep that calendar updated, so if there are ever any questions about an assignment, it can be referenced there. All students need a quiet place to work at home, set your student up for success by providing this. My room is available before school Tuesday through Friday for students who need assistance and after school on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. I will try to let students know on the few occasions that I am not available at these times.

Please feel free to contact me at any time with any questions, concerns or requests. E-mail is the most efficient way to contact me. I review my email and check voicemail before school, during my conference period (2:40-3:30) and after school.

Algebra I Supply List

The following list of supplies will be essential to your learning:

· Pencils

· Erasers

· Notebook Paper

· One 2-pocket folder

· Composition Notebook OR Spiral Notebook – 1 subject

· Colored pencils

Supplies that would be helpful include:

· Glue

· 12 inch / 30 centimeter ruler

To promote a healthy classroom, it would be great if each student could supply either:

A box of facial tissue or a bottle of hand sanitizer.

Glue, facial tissue and hand sanitizer will be collected for classroom use. Students are responsible for keeping up with their other supplies.
