Heartland Swallow Studies offers mobile Flexible Endoscopic Evaluations of Swallowing (FEES), which is an objective swallow evaluation that can be done right at bedside in your facility. Your residents will not have to travel anywhere and they can eat/drink what they want during the exam. FEES is completed by passing a very small camera along the floor of the nose to visualize the throat. The camera is attached to a laptop where the swallow study is viewed in real-time and recorded for review.

Bedside swallow evaluations have a 70% error rate! Your SLP does not have x-ray vision. FEES is a gold standard exam for dysphagia diagnostics that can be brought to the bedside and has been shown to be higher in specificity in identifying penetration, aspiration, residue, and spillage than a modified barium swallow study.

Removing diet restrictions and determining strategies for safe oral intake can help prevent congestive heart failure, respiratory infections, urinary tract infections, electrolyte imbalance, and sepsis (see resource page). Imaging will help your facility SLP determine the appropriate diet and strategies for your residents!

I am passionate about educating peers, clients, and families about dysphagia. I graduated from the University of Nebraska at Omaha with a Master's in Speech-Language Pathology.

I have worked in nearly every acute care facility in the Omaha area. My experience covers multiple settings including inpatient, outpatient, skilled rehabilitation, and home health care. I am a 2022 and 2023 ACE Award recipient, with extensive education in dysphagia diagnosis and treatment, head/neck cancer, upper airway, and endoscopy.
