Our school has selected the Star 360 as our required yearly benchmark for all enrolled students. The Star 360 is a computer adaptive online assessment for math and language arts. Students take the assessment in the comfort of their own homes in the fall and spring. Each component of the assessment takes approximately 20-30 minutes to complete.
TK/K Students: Early Literacy
1st Grade Students: Early Literacy and Mathematics
2nd-11th Grade Students: Reading and Mathematics
Fall Window: First two weeks of enrollment
Spring Window: Late April/Early May
The Star 360 assessment provides an array of data used for guiding instruction. Students take the Star 360 each fall and spring, and that data is compared and analyzed to see areas of growth and need for support for each individual student. This assessment is one of many tools used to help create an individualized education plan for our students. Full participation in this assessment is required per our charter, and the collected data is critical to our support of students and the WASC and charter renewal processes.
PAUSING THE TEST
Students can pause the test by selecting Stop Test (upper right-hand corner) and Resume Later. Students may pause up to two times but must complete the assessment within eight days of logging in the first time. The admin password for accessing a paused test is heartland.
TIPS FOR SUCCESS
Choose a day and time when your student does not feel anxious or otherwise stressed. Encourage your child to try their best! They may answer some questions more easily than others. Encourage your student to make an educated guess to determine an answer to a challenging question. If a child is stuck, please point out an incorrect answer for them to select so they can move on to the next set of questions. Choosing the right answer for a child will cause the assessment to adapt to a more difficult level or concept. Your child may want to take their two assessments on different days or several hours apart to prevent testing fatigue.
SHOULD I HELP MY CHILD?
As this is a computer-adaptive assessment, it is very important you do not help your child or coach them in any manner. You may want to sit by a student who is new to test-taking or otherwise anxious about the process, but you should only be there for moral support and encouragement and not to prompt or help your student in any way.
AFTER THE TEST
Review the reports your HST provides you, including the Instructional Report and Diagnostic Report. You can watch this video to learn how to better read these assessment reports. The information on the reports can guide instruction planning as you look for intervention or enrichment strategies.
