Opportunities

Students who choose to study at HGSC Sixth Form are exposed to a great range of both extra-curricular opportunities and support outside of the classroom which is why so many students choose to study with us rather than larger post-16 provisions. Read through the below for an idea of what your experiences could include if you choose to join us.

Universities & Careers

Throughout your studies at HGSC Sixth Form you will receive weekly notices about opportunities with both local and national universities and employers. We have established strong links with a number of sought-after employers and universities, including Oxbridge (the Universities of Oxford and Cambridge). We have seen an ever-growing number of applications to Oxbridge and have the experience to support you should this be something you're interested in. Built into our tutor programme is a super curricular focus, designed to support you during your two years with us to your dream destination. That destination may be university, a particular apprenticeship or direct employment. Whatever it is, we have an experienced Sixth Form leadership and careers team who will be able to advise you every step of the way.

Work Experience

Preparing students for their post 18 destination is an integral part of what we do at HGSC Sixth Form. We are therefore huge advocates for students undertaking work experience to both inform their career choice and to strengthen an application. In July Year 12 students will complete a one week work experience placement that they will receive guidance and support in finding. As a Sixth Form we also have a wealth of experience in supporting students who intend to apply for competitive destinations such as medicine and offer guidance and support regarding the plethora of work experience that is required. Throughout the year we also advertise virtual work experience opportunities to students.

Student Management Team

The Student Management Team Programme has successfully been running in the Sixth Form for a number of years. It consists of students from Years 12 and 13 who are passionate, dedicated and enthusiastic and who enjoy what they do at Sixth Form or can see ways of making things better.

Our Student Management Team is a voluntary scheme and our ambassadors participate in many events including:

  • Meeting and greeting prospective students and their parents at our Open Evening and Taster events

  • Weekly meetings to discuss new ideas or student concerns

  • Parents Evenings

  • Charity fundraisers

  • Leading our regular varsity tournaments

Taking on such a role provides students with an opportunity to enhance their communication, interpersonal and organisational skills as well as boosting their confidence; all attributes that are increasingly important for successful university and apprenticeship applications.

This year we will be introducing the exciting opportunity to take an ASDAN short course in Leadership for all of our Student Management Team.

Varsity

During the year we hold regular varsity tournaments in which students in years 12 and 13 go head to head in a series of 5 events, competing for the varsity trophy. The events are varied throughout the year but include a mixture of sporting fixtures, quizzes and some unique competitions.

Examples of previous varsity rounds include:

  • 5-a-side football

  • Netball

  • Dodgeball

  • Mario Kart tournament

  • University Challenge

  • Just Dance tournament

  • Music quiz

International Expeditions

Students will be offered a huge range of opportunities during their Sixth Form studies, including our annual ski trip and biannual international expedition. Some of our international trips in recent years include:

  • Borneo

  • Washington and New York

  • Italy

  • Switzerland

  • China

  • Tanzania

  • Belgium

Prom

At the end of Year 13 students are invited to spend the evening celebrating their time at HGSC at Year 13 Prom. The evening usually consists of arrival drinks, a sit down meal, a disco and a photo booth, and has been held at Derby Cricket Ground in most recent years.
