Grade 9
ADA 1O1 - Dramatic Arts, Grade 9 Open
This course emphasizes the active exploration of dramatic forms and techniques. We use material from a wide range of styles and cultures. Inherent in this class is the development of problem solving skills, the ability to work with others, clear communication and risk taking. Student construct, perform, and analyze drama, and then reflect on the experiences to develop an understanding of themselves, the art form, and the world around them.
Grade 10
ADA 2O1 - Dramatic Arts, Grade 10 Open
This course requires students to actively explore dramatic performance using their own ideas and perspectives as well as sources selected from a wide range of styles and cultures. Student learning will include identifying and using the principles of space, time, voice, and movement in creating, sustaining, and communicating authentic characters. Students will assume responsibility for decisions made in the creation and presentation of a production and will reflect on the experience.
Grade 11
ADA 3M1 - Dramatic Arts, Grade 11 University/College
Prerequisite: ADA 1O1 or ADA 2O1
This course requires students to create and to perform dramatic presentations. Students will analyze, interpret, and perform works of drama from various cultures, including plays from the early twentieth century. Students will also research different acting styles and conventions for their presentations. They will create original works, and analyze the functions of playwright, director, actor, designer, and technician.
ADD 3M1 - Theatre Production, Grade 11 University/College
Prerequisite: Dramatic Arts, Grade 9 or 10
This course focuses on the production elements of the theatre. It is for students interested in having their talent showcased on stage from behind the curtain. Students will analyze, interpret, and design every element of dramatic works from sketches to stage construction, wardrobe creation, lighting / sound design, props, playbills, posters and more. They will tour professional facilities and meet working personalities in the industry. This course will engage their imagination and encourage it to come to life through teamwork and hands-on problem solving.
ADV 3O1 - Performance for Film & Television, Grade 11 Open
Prerequisites: None
This course aims to provide grade 11/12 students the chance to gain experience in writing and performance for video and film that they would not otherwise experience in ADA 3/4M courses. It will compliment more technically oriented classes offered at the grade 11 level. This course will prepare students to communicate story, character and information in creative styles in film while learning to critically analyze the vast amount of video media being absorbed on a daily basis. Come and make movies.
Grade 12
ADA 4M1 - Dramatic Arts, Grade 12 University/College
Prerequisite: ADA 3O1 or ADA 3M1
This course requires students to experiment with forms and conventions in dramatic literature, and to create/adapt and present dramatic works. Students will research dramatic forms, conventions, themes, and theories of acting and directing from different historical periods, and apply their knowledge of these in analyzing and interpreting dramatic literature. This includes Canadian works and works from various cultures in the late twentieth century. Students will also examine the significance of dramatic arts in society.
ADP 4M1 - Theatre Development, Grade 12 University/College
Prerequisite: ADD 3M1 or ADA 3M1
This course focuses on creating theatre for public audiences. Students will create original and published plays, exploring genres and character concepts. They will engage in leadership roles while applying theory for acting and directing in various styles. They will be challenged with the business aspect of the discipline, understanding what it takes to budget, market and manage a small theatre company. This is a course for students who are interested in managing, creating and producing performance.
ADV 4M1 – Film & Television, Grade 12 University/College
Prerequisite: ADV 3M1 or ADA3M1
Similar to ADV3M in execution of the content. Students will make films throughout the course focusing on Character change and plot convergence. They will focus on performance techniques from the Method to the more contemporary theories in the industry. Come and make movies.
