Dear Rattlesnake Community,
The first day of school can be hard for parents/guardians.
Part of you feels excited, and the other part feels sad.
For many years, you've held their hand and been their loving guide.
Now you know the time has come to leave them by our side.
But it is only for a little while, as your child will learn and grow.
And at the end of every day, they will share with you all they know.
So as you walk away, don't worry anymore.
We'll take care of your precious gifts when you leave them at our door.
Looking forward to learning, growing and playing together.

The first day of RSP Kindergarten starts on Wednesday, September 3, 2025, at 8:50 a.m.
Welcome to RSP! On the first day of kindergarten, your child will meet their educators and classmates and have an opportunity to become familiar with their new classroom environment at Rattlesnake Point Public School.
Please accompany your child to the kindergarten playground at the end of the parking lot. We ask parents to stay outside of the fenced area. The kindergarten educators will greet the children and lead them to their classroom line. Some children find this time harder than others, but experience shows that most children settle in happily after a few minutes.
Please click on the underlined title to fill out the First Week Information Form and send it back in your child's backpack on the first day of school.
Take a look at the list of items to bring on the first day of school by clicking here. Thank you!
We look forward to learning, growing and playing with you!
Supervision begins at 8:35 a.m. Please accompany your child to the kindergarten playground located at the end of the school parking lot. Educators will be waiting at the gates facing the parking lot to greet you and your child. Your child will line up with their classmates until the bell rings at 8:50 a.m. Please be on time; instruction begins as soon as the children enter the classroom. If your child is taking a bus, an educator will escort your child from the bus lane to the kindergarten playground.
The kindergarten program is a child-centred, developmentally appropriate, integrated program for aged 3-6 year old children. Therefore instructional time in each kindergarten class looks a bit different as it supports the interests and needs of the learners within that class. At Rattlesnake Point Public School outdoor exploration and learning is extremely important. Therefore we are outside each day for 60 - 120 minutes. RSP kindergarten classes have large group gatherings for community circles, songs and poems as well as read alouds during the day. Each class has open exploration time, where the children can choose their learning activities to engage in. Learning centres can include: sensory bin, sand box, building area, dramatic area, listening/quiet reading area, art easel, writing table, light table, math bins and playdough or inquiry area. Small groups are offered throughout the day for guided instruction. Guided instruction can include guided reading or writing, alphabet and letter sound recognition, math lessons, as well as inquiry and art to name a few. The children have the opportunity to take part in a library book exchange once a week. You can read more about the program by clicking here.
Please dress your child appropriately for the weather as our kindergarten students enjoy exploring and learning outdoors. For ideas of how to dress your child for the weather click here.
At Rattlesnale Point Public School the kindergarten children go outside each day for approximately 60-120 minutes. During this time the children work in small groups investigating and learning about nature and their environment. Other children may choose to play in the sandbox, create imaginary games, and develop their gross motor skills through running, riding bikes and playing games such as tag or hide and seek. Other options are building structures, reading books, writing in nature journals, or using sidewalk chalk.
Nature walks and community walks are also a large part of the kindergarten program at RSP. The students get a chance to explore the local community by going for walks and exploring other parks or our local pond. This is an opportunity for the students to learn about nature, ask questions, and express their natural curiosity.
Our school is a NUT-FREE environment, this means no peanuts, tree-nuts or Nutella spread please! No nut substitutes or food that "may contain nuts" as well. Thank you for your understanding for the safety of our students.
We have two nutrition breaks at school. Please pack two healthy lunches for your child. When children are getting settled into the routines of school you may be surprised by how much or how little they are eating. This is completely normal and will typically work itself out after a few weeks of school.
Please label all lunch containers (tops and bottoms) so that if they are misplaced they can be easily returned.
Please ensure you pack a nutritious lunch for your child. Practice opening and closing containers at home, as this can be a tricky skill to learn. We often recommend having two sections in the lunch bag or labeling containers so your child does not eat all of their food during the first nutrition break. Please pack food you know your child likes and save trying new foods for home!
Importance of Nutrition
Children need proper nutrients to grow healthy and strong. Choosing healthy food options will:
Provide their bodies with energy, proteins and vitamins needed to grow
Help their muscles and bones grow stronger
Increase their ability to concentrate
Give them a source of energy to complete activities and play
Dismissal begins at 2:55 -3:10 p.m.
School staff will only dismiss children to the parent or caregiver that is noted on the First Week Information Form (click on the underlined title to access). Please inform us, in writing, if your child's dismissal information changes during the year. When picking up your child at dismissal, please wait outside of the kindergarten fenced area.
If your child takes the bus, an educator will escort your child to the appropriate bus line. Please ensure you are at the bus stop on time to pick your child up. More information about transportation can be found at www.haltonbus.ca.
If your child is going to the Parkview after school program, an educator will bring your child to meet Parkview staff.
If your child is going to a different child care provider after school, please let their educator know and they will make arrangements to ensure your child is taken to the proper location.
Backpack
A regular sized backpack that will be large enough for all of your child’s belongings, including lunch/snacks, water bottle, extra clothing, able to fit a big library book, and school work such as arts, crafts etc.
Water Bottle
A good quality, LEAK-PROOF water bottle labeled with their name, that your child can open and close independently.
Snacks and Lunch:
Please encourage your child to practice opening and closing all lunch boxes, containers, and packages prior to coming to school. Kids should be able to feed themselves independently. A lunch bag could have an ice pack to keep the food fresh and a thermos for keeping meals warm. Let us know if your child has any allergies and/or requires an Epi-pen, and please contact the office.
Dress for the Weather
Dress for all kinds of weather as the children will be learning and playing outside each day. If you feel the need for sunscreen we kindly ask that you put sunscreen on your child before they head off to school. The sun can still be strong at the beginning of the school year and most children will spend an hour during “prime time” out in the sun.
For ideas on the types of outdoor clothing please click here.
Indoor Shoes
Each child needs a pair of velcro shoes to remain at school. Please label all footwear, with first and last names or initials on the inside.
Extra Clothing:
An extra set of clothing should be packed in a sealed clear zip lock bag with their first and last name. Please pack extra spare clothes especially under garments and socks in case of accidents.
Toileting Expectations
Children should be fully toilet trained and know proper hand washing routines as well as be able to dress themselves. We can offer verbal help, but we do encourage them to be independent. Please ensure that your child is dressed for school in clothing that helps them be able to redress after toileting. For additional information please click on the underlined text and read Toilet Learning Tips.
