What are we learning about in grade 1?
Just a snap shot of topics we are covering this month in our classroom...
Literacy:
Word work: identifying letter sounds and beginning to learn club 22 words, printing letters correctly (formation and direction)
Readers workshop: Reading strategies, reading to self (building stamina), read to someone, how to pick a book, beginning middle and end of stories, reading comprehension strategies
Writers Workshop: learning to LOVE to write, appropriate sentence structure, brainstorming ideas and making connections to authors
Math: subitizing, patterning, 10 frames and reading a daily calendar , sorting objects by their attributes
Social Studies: All about me, different families, focus on community building in the classroom
Club 22 Words
Here are the important frequency words that we'll be focusing on first. In Kindergarten these words were called "popcorn words"...in Grade 1, we call them "club words". Learning to spell and quickly identify these words will help your child's reading to soar!
