Kindergarten Protocols

Silver Creek Public School

Dear K2 Families,

Below you will find information on the return to school plan for Kindergarten in Halton and specific information for our school. I wanted to give you this information in case you are wondering what the day will look like for your child. Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns.

Kindergarten will look very different this year, however the Halton District School Board has provided educators with some specific steps to take to follow the play based curriculum as closely as possible as well as health and safety protocols.

We will continue to provide an inquiry and play based program while following the full Kindergarten curriculum with all four frames. The four frames are Belonging and Contributing, Self-Regulation and Well-Being, Demonstrating and Communicating Literacy and Mathematics Behaviours, and Problem Solving and Innovating.

While inside the classroom, students will play and rotate through centers in “Bubble Groups” (i.e., table groups) together for a week at a time. Educators will keep a detailed seating plan log and only change groups on Mondays. Students will have their own containers with learning materials such as pencils, crayons, journals, etc. There will be no communal sensory or water tables this year. Instead, each student will have access to their own, individual sensory items. There will be no plush materials in the classroom (e.g., puppets/dress up) and items that are shared will follow cleaning protocols after each use (e.g., blocks/Lego). Students will also be required to wash their hands prior to and after handling shared materials.

The Kindergarten Program emphasizes the importance of going outside in order to develop questions for inquiry and to support self regulation and well being. This year, the focus will continue to be on learning in the outdoors and for social distancing. Students should come to school prepared to be outdoors.
