At Sheridan we value arriving at school and in class on time. Please help to ensure that your child is here prior to the morning bell. School playground supervision starts at 8:55am, the bell rings at 9:05am. School ends at 3:25pm and playground supervision ends at 3:35pm. Please pick up or drop off for appointments during breaks where possible.
Drop Off/Pick Up Information For Students
BUSING
Children who live north of Upper Middle Road are eligible and automatically signed up for the bus. Bus routes are set mid-August by Halton Transportation Services. It is very important that bus children ride the bus, as there is a lot of congestion at the school during pick up and drop off times.
Kindergarten bus children will be clearly identified by a bus tag giving name, route and stop location. Kindergarten children sit at the front of the bus where they can be monitored by the driver. You MUST be at the stop to meet your child or the child will be returned to the school. It is a good idea to make arrangements with another parent at the same stop who can take your child for a few minutes if you are delayed. Bus children are escorted to the bus and loaded on by school staff.
ARRIVING BY CAR
Should you need to drive your child to school, please note that the Kiss and Ride area is for drop off only. You MAY NOT park and leave your car in this area. If you need to park, there may be some spaces in the lower lot, or you may park in designated areas on the road. Children may arrive between 8:55am and 9:05am when teachers are outside to supervise. Please do not park in the parking lot for an extended time, as this blocks access for other parents who also wish to drop their child off.
The kindergarten class is dismissed from the side doors that face the Kindergarten playground. Please make sure that the teacher sees you when you pick your child up. If someone other than the usual person is picking up your child, please inform the classroom teacher and office.
YMCA AFTER SCHOOL CARE
If your child is registered for onsite YMCA care then they will be escorted to the program at the end of the day. If you need more information on BEFORE AND AFTER School Care program for the YMCA please go to their website. If you'd like more information on other programs, please check out the Child Care Directory and Information Line .
LUNCHES/SNACKS
Parents are responsible for providing their child’s lunch, drinks and snacks each day. The children should bring everything they need for their lunch (refillable water bottle, forks, spoons, etc.) and please keep in mind that there is no place to refrigerate the lunches nor is there a place they can heat it up. The children will eat their lunches in their own classroom and will be supervised by an adult.
For the safety of all children at Sheridan Public School, we request that NO PEANUTS or nut by-products as well as any alternative nut butters (WowButter, Nutella etc.) come to school with your children. There may be specific allergies in a classroom that we will make you aware of once we know them. Please advise us right away if your child has any food allergies. We thank you for your understanding and cooperation.
WHAT TO WEAR TO KINDERGARTEN
Indoors – Our classroom is a very busy place where children are encouraged to get fully involved in their activities. This means they will need to wear clothing that is comfortable and easily washed. Please also ensure your child is able to independently redress following toilet visits. As clothing may become soiled or damp, a change of clothes including socks, underwear, a top and a bottom should be kept at school. If your child is still in Pull-Ups, please make sure to send Pull-Ups and wipes. Each child must have a clean pair of shoes to be kept at school to wear in the classroom and in the gym. Velcro shoes would help the children to become independent dressers; however lace shoes are welcome, providing they can independently tie their own laces. Teachers may ask for a swap of their extra clothes as the seasons change. At present masks are NOT mandatory in Kindergarten, but they are encouraged. Please ensure that you pack several mask changes for each day, as they can get moist throughout the day.
Outdoors- Outdoor play is part of our daily program in all seasons. We will go out EVERY DAY except if it is raining or extremely cold. Please dress your child for outdoor play, especially in the winter months. Layers make it easier for your child to decide what to wear, some days they might like a sweatshirt or sweater to wear in class. Please label all indoor and outdoor clothing – size four blue snow pants all look the same to a four year old.
THINGS YOU CAN DO TO GET READY FOR KINDERGARTEN
Practice printing my first name and naming each letter in my name out loud. Write my name every day!
Practice using the washroom without help. Remember to undress and dress myself when going to the bathroom. Practice wiping by myself. Did you remember to wash your hands?
Practice opening and closing my backpack and putting my snack bag and other items inside. Ask your Mom or Dad to label all of your "belongings" (e.g. shoes, backpack, jacket, etc.)
Practice putting your shoes on by yourself. Practice tying shoes or doing up the velcro.
Practice tidy-up time. Put toys and games away at home - that's what you'll help do at school.
Ask Mom or Dad to read you a story every day. Talk about the story. Look at the parts of the book: front, back, top, bottom, title, pictures and words. Practice turning the pages carefully.
Practice counting lots of things up to 10. Can you print the numbers? Can you match the number to the set of items?
Practice making lists, what can you write about?
Practice zippers, buttons, snaps and tying laces.
Practice taking turns and using manners.
Practice wearing a mask for a portion of the day.
Practice putting on a mask and taking a mask off by myself.
