Your child will require a backpack that should be BIG enough to hold their lunch bag, zippy, their work and a library book. They should be able to carry it themselves.
All kindergarten students will receive a "zippy" at the beginning of the year. This is one of the ways their educators will send home any school communications. They are to bring it to school and take it home every day.
Please pack an extra set of clothes for your child, labelled with their name, as there are many opportunities for them to get wet/dirty. It is important that your child is able to independently undress and dress themselves.
If your child's clothes are sent home, please remember to send new clothes the next day. Refer to HDSB's What to Wear handout.
Your child should be able to independently use the toilet. In order to set them up for success, avoid dressing them in cumbersome buttons or buckles. Instead, bottoms with elastic waistbands are ideal. Have them practice toileting and hygiene skills at home to ensure their success at school. Refer to HDSB's Toilet Tips handout.
It's Kindergarten! It's ok for children to get dirty! Please do not dress your child in anything you may not want stained.
If you want your child to wear a mask, please ensure your child has proper fitting masks and is aware of how to wear it correctly.
It's okay to be nervous, but be positive and encourage your child to be excited about kindergarten! REMEMBER, children may reflect your own anxieties!
