Welcome to our "little school with the BIG heart"!

We have a wonderful community and we love our volunteers!

All school volunteers need to submit a police check to the office and then an annual offence declaration in subsequent years.

Join our team! Our MGPS School Council usually hosts monthly meetings and we support several programs, events and fundraisers for our school, our students and our families.

PROGRAMS, EVENTS AND FUNDRAISERS

We usually offer weekly Pizza Days and monthly Cookie and Popcorn Days for students and staff, ordered through SchoolCash Online.

Annual events supported by council usually include our Open House, our Dance-a-thon, our Movie Nights and our Fun Fair. Other fun events usually hosted at the school each year include Junglesport and/or X Movement.

Our school also participates in the annual Terry Fox School Run in the Fall and the annual Jump Rope for Heart in the Spring along with the annual Scholastic Canada Book Fair in our library.

School Council also offers Kindergarten Mentoring (matching a new Kindergarten student's family with a returning Kindergarten student's family) and Mohawk Park Meetups for new families in the Spring and Summer (play at the park by the school and ask us questions).

We also arrange various fundraisers throughout the year (e.g. apples, cookie dough and plants, etc.) and have ongoing fundraisers with Mabel's Labels and Oliver's Labels - label all of your child's belongings (backpack, shoes, boots, hats, coats, hoodies, lunch bag, water bottle, extra clothes for school, etc.) so that they can be returned if misplaced and support our school with your labels purchase.

Our Kindergarten wing (built in 2009) is located on the west side of the school with four classrooms, each with their own washroom and entrance/exit doors. Each room has windows that open and air conditioning. See HDSB Ventilation and Mohawk Gardens Ventilation Report.

Kindergarten rooms are called the Yellow Room(KF-4), Red Room(KF-3), Blue Room(KF-2) and Green Room (KF-1) and their hallway doors match these colours.

Each class has approximately 26 students, about half are Junior Kindergarten (JK) and about half are Senior Kindergarten (SK). Students usually remain in their same class for their two years of kindergarten; our SK students then serve as role models for our JK students.

GO MUSTANGS!

Our mascot is a Mustang horse and our school colours are ORANGE and ROYAL BLUE.

We wear pink (or purple or red) for Kindness Wednesdays and school colours for School Spirit Fridays.

We usually sell MG spirit wear each Fall.

OUR HISTORY

Mohawk Public School opened in 1968 and merged with Elizabeth Gardens Public School in 1984 to become Mohawk Gardens Public School (MGPS).
In 2018, we celebrated our 50th anniversary with a big reunion event - see the legacy bricks in our outdoor classroom.

NEIGHBOURHOOD SCHOOLS

MG students have the option to apply (by the end of January in Grade 1) to attend French Immersion at Pineland Public School starting in Grade 2. Pineland has Grades 2 to 8 French Immersion.

Students who 'graduate' from Mohawk Gardens in Grade 6 then attend Frontenac Public School for Grades 7 and 8 and our neighbourhood high school is Nelson High School.

During school hours, our school shares the use of the City of Burlington's Mohawk Park with St. Patrick Catholic Elementary School which has Kindergarten to Grade 8 students.

Our Halton District School Board Ward 5 Trustee is Amy Collard.

Our City of Burlington Ward 5 Councillor is Paul Sharman.
