We are so excited that you and your family are joining our school community. Here is some information about your school to help you get to know us a little better. We are a kindergarten to grade eight school with approximately 355 students. As you walk down the hallways you will see many friendly faces that might live near you or are on the same bus as you. In our library, we not only read but we use this space to celebrate, learn, and collaborate with others. You will spend lots of time in our beautiful courtyard. This space was created so you can explore, inquire, and play. At the front of our school, there is a beautiful garden that you will enjoy all year round. Also, there are many other areas outside of our school that you and your class might explore together! We know there will be lots of pictures of your learning! You will also visit our gymnasium where we will meet for assemblies, exercise, or do some yoga! At Brookville, we model kindness each and every day in all that we do. Our school motto is Work Hard, Be Nice, and Make a Difference. All of the staff and students at Brookville are excited to welcome you to our community. We can't wait to meet you!

All of our Kindergarten classes are blended which means they are mixed age groupings (children are 4 and 5). There is one Ministry curriculum for both of the Kindergarten years and expectations are for the end of Kindergarten. Kindergarten is an early childhood education setting including two adults; a certified Teacher and a certified Early Childhood Educator; and classes with 15 students have one teacher.
Children make sense of the world around them by exploring. Through play, they develop social and cognitive skills, problem solving, confidence and a sense of self regulation and well being. When we make ‘play’ the foundation of learning, we teach to the whole child. Their curious minds are more open and receptive when play is at the heart of their learning. Literacy and numeracy happen organically through the day as children explore, discover and practice life skills at their own pace.
Educators take observations, ask questions and build on the learning that is happening at that moment. Inquiries are formed based on children’s questions and interest, which leads to enhanced engagement and interest. The focus is very much about the process that we take while learning versus the overall product.
Open ended activities are provided, which allow children to make choices, develop independence and express their creativity. It also provides differentiation by catering to each student’s needs and interests.
Children work with a variety of materials and loose parts, (i.e., blocks, rocks, gems, sticks, Lego, Plasticine, paint, writing tools, etc), and in turn gain a strong foundation of knowledge, a love of learning and the skills needed to prepare them as they move up through school.
Children explore inside the classroom as well as outside in nature, and learn so much about the world through observing and exploring with their own curious eyes and mind. Through play, children make sense of the world around them. They make connections and act out experiences that are relatable and engaging to them where they are at that moment.
Mrs. Crossfield, Miss McLaughlin/Ms. Bajwa, Mrs. Dempsey/Miss Ward have been the FDK Educators for the 2022-2023 school year. Next year, there will be 2 full FDK classes.
At Brookville, we have a variety of classrooms and educator teams. Depending on numbers, some classrooms will have one educator and others will have two educators.
In the rooms that have two educators, one is a DECE (Designated Early Childhood Educator) and the other is an OCT (Ontario Certified Teacher). Together, these two experts work as a co-teaching team to plan, develop, document and deliver programming within the classroom on a daily basis. Together they problem solve and manage classroom issues, coming up with solutions together. They are a teaching team! They share the duties of teaching and leading small groups and large groups. All FDK educators are experts in teaching young children.
Brookville school is a quaint little school where everyone is friendly and knows everyone. We have an expansive outdoor area (one of the largest in the school board) for our students to enjoy. Brookville will become your new home away from home.
Our classrooms are created by both the educators and students who set them up to reflect their interests and needs. Our classrooms support children to explore, learn, develop social skills and friendships and most of all have fun!
We are fortunate to have an amazing outdoor learning space and school yard for our students to engage in learning opportunities outside the classroom. We consider our Courtyard, Learning Garden and School Yard to be extensions of our classrooms!
In an effort to keep our classrooms clean, we ask the children to leave a pair of indoor running shoes at school. We will be using these shoes when we go to the gym as well. We encourage independence in our classrooms. Please help your child practice putting on and taking off his/her shoes independently over the summer (Velcro helps with this task). Taking your child to the store when buying shoes will ensure that the shoes fit comfortably. Even if your child is able to tie his/her own shoes, Velcro shoes are preferred. Eliminating the potential danger that undone laces pose is an important factor. Children are required to have indoor shoes at school all year so that we can assist in keeping the classrooms clean and free of mud and dirt. Flip flops/crocs/sandals are not appropriate footwear.
We ask that the children leave a full set of extra clothes at school. Please put the clothes in a ziplock bag with your child’s name on it. Your child may have to change his/her clothes at school for many reasons;
spilled drinks or food
getting wet at the water table
falling in a puddle
wet socks
paint spills
toileting accidents
We will send a note home if you need to replace any of the articles of clothing. Please help your child practice getting dressed and undressed independently over the summer. We will send the clothes home periodically to make sure that they still fit and are season-appropriate.
Your child will be bringing many things home after a busy day at school - his/her lunch bag and any creations he/she has made at school. Please make sure that the bag you choose is big enough to hold all of these items. A small backpack may look like the appropriate size for your child, but it will not hold everything that he/she needs. Please help your child to practice packing and unpacking his/her backpack independently over the summer.
We have 2 nutrition breaks at school. You will need to provide food and drinks for both of these breaks. Please provide a re-usable water bottle for your child to use each day. We will refill it here at school if necessary. Make sure to label it! We suggest that you label the food 1 &2 (or put in a lunch bag with two compartments) to help your child regulate what they eat. Over the summer, please help your child practice opening and closing his/her lunch bag and containers. Labelling all containers (top and bottom) will ensure that all containers make it home. Please remember that all food needs to be nut-free - read the labels!
Before COVID, our FDK classrooms have successfully used “floating snack” in the past. Educator Teams make the decision to use floating snack based on the individual needs of the children in their classrooms. Planning for floating snack and traditional snack is exactly the same. Please be sure to pack enough food for your child as well as making sure all snacks are properly labeled: Snack 1 and Snack 2. It is very important that your child is independent in opening and closing his or her own lunch bag, containers, juice jugs and zip lock bags. (We will provide scissors for the snack table for tricky packages!)
Children are welcome to visit a designated snack table in their classroom to have a healthy snack each morning. This designated table is open to your child when they feel hungry. Each classroom opens their floating snack area at a time that works within their daily schedule. Classrooms use a floating snack chart to track the children’s eating. Children are asked to flip their name or picture over on a snack chart. This helps teachers and lunchroom supervisors monitor who has eaten and who has not.
*Floating snack helps children regulate their wants and needs which promotes self regulation*
Please practice opening and closing those tricky containers, lunch bags, Ziploc bags and juice boxes over the summer. We want your child’s transition to school to be an easy one. We know that fine motor skills will develop over time but allowing them time to practice before September will help alleviate frustration. Work with your child, you know them best!
Snack Packing Tip: Let them help you! Getting your child involved in the planning and packing process will help them develop independence. They will get excited to eat their snacks and help their transition from home to school to be an easy one.
Please be aware the Brookville Public School is a NUT FREE School. Please be sure to read all labels when packing your child’s lunch and snacks for school.
Labels, Label, Label! Did we mention label? Please properly label your child’s snacks. It will help them quickly get into the snack routines here at school. Talk to them about Snack 1 and Snack 2. Reminding them to only eat Snack 1 in the morning and Snack 2 at lunch.
Keeping Hydrated: Please pack a sealed water bottle for your child to drink at break times and to sip throughout the day.
Not everyone is the same, and that’s AWESOME! We recognize that some children are not “sandwich eaters” and are more of the “grazing” type and that’s okay! Feel free to pack a variety of different snacks for your child to eat.
For more information about bussing please visit https://www.haltonbus.ca/.
On a typical day, the buses arrive at our school between 8:05 and 8:15. We assign each child or small group of children a bus buddy that is on their bus. If your child has an older sibling at Brookville, they can be their bus buddy. When the bus arrives at school, your child’s bus buddy or older sibling will escort him/her to the primary yard before going to their own designated area in the schoolyard. There are teachers on duty to supervise the children as they get off the bus. The primary yard is completely fenced in and supervised by a teacher starting at 8:05. The children will walk over to the FDK meeting zone (which is over by door number 12) where a FDK educator will be on duty. When the bell rings at 8:15 they will line up in their class cohort and their FDK Educators will come out to the meeting zone to meet the class, pick them up and bring them inside to their classroom.
At the end of the day, the classes walk out to the primary blacktop area. From that area, the students who are being picked up will be dismissed to their parent through the primary gates over by the walkway and dumpsters. The bus students will be taken to their bus lines to line up outside. Once in their bus lines and when the bell rings at 2:35, the teachers on duty will escort each bus group directly to the bus and help them get loaded on.
Please note that the bus company’s policy is that if there is not an adult to receive a kindergarten student, the driver will not let the child off the bus. The bus driver will let the bus company know and your child will be brought back to the school. You will be notified and you will have to pick up your child at the school.
If you will be bringing your child to school, please bring them to the small gate at the south end of the primary yard. From there, they will have to walk up the paved area for a bit to get to the FDK meeting zone which is over by door number 12. Parents are not permitted in the yard. You may say your goodbyes at the gate. For the first few weeks, we will have the teacher on duty help the little ones get to their appropriate area for drop offs.
If your child will be picked up at the end of the day, one of his/ her teachers will escort him/her to the primary blacktop area to meet you over by the gated entryways.
If your child’s usual routine changes for a particular day please notify your child’s teacher that morning. We will follow your child’s usual routine if we do not receive a notification.
Although we encourage all of our students to take the bus, we realize that there are certain times that you may drive your child to and from school. If you do drive your child, please park your car in the parking lot located beside the front of the school off of Guelph Line (there are approximately 10 parking spaces in this lot). Walk your child to the primary blacktop in the morning. The school’s parking lot is very busy first thing in the morning and at dismissal and is for buses only. Please do not park in the school’s driveway/parking lot to drop off your child. We have several school buses coming and going and stopped cars impede their movement and could be dangerous for the children getting on and off the buses and for your child.
Brookville Public School has implemented a safe arrival system. If your child will be late or absent from school please go to https://go.schoolmessenger.ca/ to record their absence.
Each child will have a cubby in the classroom to keep his/her belongings when at school.
It is important that your child brings a backpack to school every day. Please be sure that it is big enough to carry an average size library book, lunch bag, crafts and notes. Bags with zippers are great because the children can open and close them independently. Please be sure to check your child’s bag daily.
We have quite a few children coming through our classrooms. Please be sure to label anything that your child brings to school. No, they will not recognize their belongings. They all belong to “Not Mine”!
We follow a balanced day schedule at Brookville. There are 2 opportunities for the children to eat. We suggest that you pack 2 small meals (half a sandwich, veggies, crackers and cheese and a drink) which your child can eat during our 2 eating times. Depending on current Public Health regulations, our classrooms may choose to implement a “Floating Snack” during the morning. Floating snacks helps the children regulate their wants and needs when appropriate, which promotes self-regulation. It would be very helpful if you label their food and containers with a #1 and # 2. Don’t forget to put your child’s name on every container (top and bottom).
We wanted to remind you that our school remains a NUT free zone, including peanuts, tree nuts, almonds. As these students could have a severe anaphylactic reaction to these items (even trace amounts that they've touched and then touch their own food), we respectfully ask that you take a careful look at the food items that you send with your children in their lunches. For the safety of our students, please avoid sending NUT products. Keeping this in mind, there are NO TREATS (e.g., cupcakes, cookies, Tim-Bits etc.) to be brought in for any reason.
We play outside at least twice a day. Please be sure to dress your child appropriately for outdoor play (sun hats, sunscreen, or mittens, hats, snow pants, splash pants, winter boots, rubber boots, etc.). We go outside in all sorts of weather!! We will go outside in the cold, in the light rain, in the snow...in almost any kind of weather. Therefore it is advisable to send extra clothes, extra mitts, splash pants etc. as it will allow your child to stay dry and warm.
We appreciate and welcome volunteers in our classroom. We ask volunteers to prepare activities, create bulletin boards, file artwork, fill paint containers, help children with activities and work with small groups of children on specific skills. As required by the Halton District School Board, all volunteers must have a Criminal Background Check which includes vulnerable sector screening and complete a Volunteer Application Form available at the school office. This includes volunteers working with children in the school or in school-related activities (school trips, hot lunch and classroom helpers). If you would like to volunteer (no matter how much time) please apply for a criminal background check at the police station. Please be aware that it takes approximately six weeks for your police check to come through. If you are interested in volunteering in September, we suggest that you apply for your police check in the summer and bring it to the school office in September. A copy will be kept on file.
The Milton Community Resource Centre provides childcare at our school for after school hours. For more information please contact them.
