HDSB uses a Student Absence Reporting System called SchoolMessenger. This is the system used for reporting student absences and receiving all messages from Palermo Public School and the HDSB. Please ensure you have provided a current email address to receive these messages. This video explains how SchoolMessenger works.
Please ensure you sign up for SchoolMessenger by visiting www.schoolmessenger.com/start (click 'sign up' in the top right). Once you have done so, you will be able to report absences via the app, website or by phone.
If you already registered your child for September, you should have received a text message from SchoolMessenger asking you to opt-in (reply “Y”) to receive attendance text messages from HDSB. If we have a valid email address, you were also sent an email informing you that you would receive this text message. New registrations will receive a text invitation once information is in the system.
Absence Reporting
Please be sure to report if your child will be late or absent, by 8:30 a.m. on the day of their absence/late arrival. You can report in the following ways:
HDSB Mobile App (available for download from the App Store and Google Play)
Website: go.schoolmessenger.ca
Phone: 1-877-409-6310 (toll-free)
All payments to the school (e.g. field trips, pizza days, yearbook) are processed online using School Cash Online. We will be sending information to you about how to sign up for School Cash Online, please watch out for this. In the meantime, find out more about paying online.
Prevalent Medical Conditions
If your child has Asthma, Diabetes, Epilepsy or Anaphylaxis, we will contact you to develop a Plan of Care with you, prior to your child starting school. This will include provisions for keeping emergency medications at school. Please ensure information about your child's health condition is in your registration form and your contact information is up to date.
In the meantime, more information about procedures for medical conditions can be found under Student Health at hdsb.ca.
Please contact the School Office (email Andrea Bergen bergena@hdsb.ca ) with any concerns about your child's medical condition.
Administering Medications at School
Parents/guardians may be permitted to attend school to administer medication to their child during school hours, provided that we have been given notice in advance and the parent/guardian reports to the office.
A parent/guardian may submit a request for a staff member to administer prescribed medication to their child, on a regular basis or in an emergency, by submitting a “Request for School Personnel to Administer Prescribed Medication” to the school Principal.
If you have any special information you'd like to share about your child please connect with Anne Nakahara by email at nakaharaa@hdsb.ca. This might include, but is not limited to, speech and language reports, occupational reports, visits to a developmental pediatrician etc.
In the event that you need to bring anything for your child during the school day (forgotten lunch, indoor shoes etc.), please visit the school office and leave items on the black cart. Use the provided stickers to label the item with your child's name and class/teacher. We will inform the teacher to arrange for the item to be picked up.
Elementary students must live greater than 1.6 kms from their board designated school to qualify for transportation based on their home address.
Transportation is set up for eligible students with Halton Student Transportation Services (HSTS).
In late August, families of eligible kindergarten students will receive a letter from HSTS outlining their child’s pick up and drop off times, bus stop location, bus route number and bus company.
All information about student transportation can be found at the HSTS website at haltonbus.ca, including:
