My name is Susan Flynn. I have been teaching full time with the Halton District School Board since January, 2001. I love to teach and I am thrilled to guide your children in their learning this year!
Working Together For Success!
I respect that you know your child very well, and so when either you or your child feel concerned about anything that is happening, please feel free to e-mail me or contact me at the school. I will do my best to get back to you as soon as possible.
Learning Should Be FUN!
I strive to create a positive, fun learning environment with clear behavioural and learning expectations. I want the students in my class to be fully engaged in all tasks and have an innate curiosity for learning.
Everyone Learns Differently
We all have different learning styles and my job is to bring out the best in every child. Some students learn by hearing, some by seeing, but most students gain success through as many hands-on experiences as possible. I will include activities such as: use of manipulatives, games, drama, songs, experiments, designing, building, inquiry, etc.
Mistakes Help Us Learn - "I just don't know it yet!"
Do not expect your child's work to be perfect, making errors is part of learning. If you emphasize your child's errors they may be reluctant to share schoolwork with you. Going over schoolwork with your child demonstrates that you think school is important and that you value your child's efforts at school. Similarly, the process of learning is the most important, not the product. Instead of focusing on a grade, you could ask your child about the process to develop critical thinking about learning: What did you learn? What do you think you could do differently next time? What did you like best about the assignment? What was hard?
Homework Expectations
As a parent of two teenagers, I truly understand how busy life can be. Just as adults need a balance in life, so do children. We all need down time, time to engage in the activities we love, and most of all, time for family and friends. It is with this in mind that I have few homework assignments, and I will try my best to have all culminating unit projects completed at school.
