Habitat destruction is the main cause of biodiversity loss. It is mainly caused by deforestation, overpopulation, pollution, and global warming.
Another example is climate change, this will majorly affect the animals that have adapted to the cold. This is true because the Earth is heating up during climate change and having lots of fur doesn't help.
One more example is the over-exploitation of resources (capturing and harvesting). For example digging for lithium, or capturing fish to eat but not giving it time to reproduce. Our excessive demand is endangering ecosystems and the harmony of life.
Deforestation is when trees are removed for either farmland, or non-forest use like building a structure. Trees are being executed at a rapid rate, endangering species, destroying habitats, and worst of all, release greenhouse gasses into the air. In a tree's lifetime, it sucks carbon into the air and turns it into food for itself. When a tree dies or is put down, the carbon is released into the sir. There are fewer trees that are able to conduct this process and more trees that are being chopped down and more carbon is being released into the air. New trees need to be planted. No trees, no us.
Overpopulation occurs when a species' population exceeds the carrying capacity of the location that they are situated at. The most popular example is us humans. We are overpopulating certain places and leaving some places underpopulated. There is a lack of biodiversity due to this imbalance. Overpopulation also leads to overconsumption, which increases demand and puts stress on biodiversity.
Global warming, also known as climate change, is threatening life everywhere. This is happening because greenhouse gasses are causing the ozone layer above us to deteriorate. The ozone layer is like our shield from lots of sunlight that could otherwise kill us because of the temperature. Without this natural shield blocking us from the harmful light, animals that have adapted to the cold are now at risk of extinction. In fact, we are at risk too!
Pollution is the initiation of harmful substances into the environment. These harmful substances are called pollutants. A very well-known type is air pollution, which is when pollutants are released into the air, usually by the burning of fossil fuels or anything harmful. Water pollution is also a common example. It is when pollutants are dumped into the sea and and they harm the wildlife living there, which is also contributes to biodiversity loss.
All of these are examples of how biodiversity loss could be caused. We need to act. Our planet could die anytime soon. We won't survive, and many are aware of this, yet these harmful actions aren't being halted.
Above are the 2020 biodiversity loss statistics.
