Climate resilience planning

In 2022, over 600 Practice Greenhealth facilities signed onto the HHS Health Sector Climate Pledge and publicly committed to "develop and release a climate resilience plan for continuous operations by the end of 2023, anticipating the needs of groups in their community that experience a disproportionate risk of climate-related harm." Drawing from Health Care Without Harm's resilience framework of "facilities, community, and public infrastructure," this cohort provides guidance and a structured approach for drafting climate resilience plans for health systems that have signed onto the HHS Pledge.
At a CleanMed session on climate resilience planning, Dr. Aparna Bole at OCCHE shared that the Dec 31, 2023 deadline for the resilience portion of the Health Sector Climate Pledge does not pertain to the development of a final comprehensive climate resilience plan. By the deadline, pledge signers should aim to have a draft plan, including having taken steps such as performing a hazard vulnerability assessment, integrating aspects of climate resilience into existing emergency operations planning, developing or strengthening community partnerships, and a schedule for plan re-evaluation and refinement - with each step being undertaken with community needs in mind.
Cohort participants are responsible for contributing and/or guiding the development of their plan for their organization.
Statement released by OCCHE on July 14, 2023: "There is no required method or template for developing a climate resilience plan, but we encourage you to review the recently-published Climate Resilience Plan Elements for Healthcare Organizations, a document OCCHE developed to explain the key elements of climate resilience plans for health care facilities."
Cohort participants have been paired up to offer the opportunity to share drafts of their plan with peers for feedback between cohort sessions. Click on the document to follow a link to expand the PDF (last update: Nov 1, 2023).
