Ms. Michelle Rosenberg, Superintendent
Guttenberg School District
Statement from Michelle Rosenberg:
“As a 2nd Generation Holocaust Survivor (the child of a survivor), I believe that it is important for the 2nd generation to share their parent(s)’s story of survival. This is imperative in an effort to keep the memory of the 6 million Jews the 4 million non Jews that lost their lives during the Holocaust.
Through an effective Holocaust and genocide curriculum in grades K-12, rich with empathy embedded concepts, varied means of resources, and properly trained teachers, we can attempt to combat anti-semitism and racism in our society.
I believe that there is a link between effective Holocaust pedagogy and bullying/violence in our schools. I will be defending my Doctoral dissertation on this topic in the Spring of 2020.
In my presentation, I will share my father's story, as it is important for as many people as necessary to hear these types of narratives. Additionally, I will discuss the stages of moral development, as it pertains to teaching the Holocaust, the ways in which the tenants of social cognitive theory effect the teaching of the Holocaust, and how these factors impact Holocaust education.
Through this presentation, I will provide examples of resources to use in the classroom as well as effective methods on how to broach this difficult subject at every grade level.”

Mr. Gene W. Woods, Teacher of History
Bayonne School District
Mr. Gene W. Woods is a Teacher of History at the Bayonne Public School District for the last thirteen years. He has taught World History, US I, Financial Literacy, US II, Facing History and Ourselves, and African American History.
Mr. Woods taught the Facing History and Ourselves course for the last seven years and worked very close with Dr. Paul Winkler (former Head of NJ Holocaust Commission). Through Dr. Winkler's encouragement, Gene and his wife Stephanie spent fifteen days in August with NJEA and NJ educators on the Holocaust Journey with Maud Dahme. As a result they forged an amazing bond through this learning experience.
Mr. Woods will discuss his work on the history of the Holocaust and prejudice reduction. He runs a program for 7th grade students and their teachers. During this program he educates district guests about the Pyramid of Hate and the Ten Stages of Genocide. Finally, he has Holocaust survivors speak to the students.
