Reading is an important component of a child’s schooling in first grade. A book bag will be sent home each night in your child’s backpack. The book bag should be returned back to school daily, as books will be swapped out each day. The books sent home will all be within your child’s reading range. Please have your child read the books independently. Books can be reread to develop fluency as well! Additionally, it is important to ask your child questions after he/she reads to build on his/her comprehension skills.
First graders should spend about 20 minutes reading each night of the week. This reading should be a balance of you reading to your child and your child reading to you. For more advanced readers, this includes your child reading independently.
** Please fill out the reading log and return it each week on Friday.
There will also be special homework projects throughout the year that will support the curriculum being taught.
Optional homework resources will be available via RazKids, IXL and Lexia.
