BVS Bulldog Buzz
Welcome to our Bulldog Buzz
2023-2024 May-June EDITION
From the Desk of Principal Lauer
Greetings Boston Valley Families and Friends,
It is hard to believe that we are closing in on the end of the school year. This is such an exciting time, but also a bittersweet time as we prepare to send our 5th grade students off to Hamburg Middle School. I am confident that our BVS 5th graders are prepared and ready to be the best learners they can be at HMS. We look forward to celebrating our 5th graders at their BVS Moving Up Day Ceremony on Friday, June 21 at 10:30. Please note that this is an updated time. Doors will open at 10:00 and we do appreciate advance notice to the main office if any of our BVS students will be attending the ceremony to cheer on a 5th grade sibling.
I also want to take this opportunity to thank the staff of BVS who work so hard every single day for all of our students. While the first full week of May is designated as Teacher Appreciation Week, we do take advantage of the opportunity to celebrate and honor all of our staff members here at BVS. Please scroll down for more information from our PTSA about how you can help make this week extra special for our staff members.
This Friday, May 3, is School Lunch Hero Day, so we also need to send a word of thanks to Miss Knight, Miss Bielecki, Mrs. Sterner, and Mr. Braman for their commitment to serving delicious breakfasts and lunches, and caring for our students in the cafe. Please be sure to remind your children to offer an extra word of thanks in the cafeteria on Friday.
In closing, I want to thank you for being wonderful partners in education and sharing your children with us each day. I wish you and yours a happy, healthy, and safe summer and look forward to seeing everyone back here at BVS in September.

UPDATES FROM THE HEALTH OFFICE
Notes from the Nurse
If you have been notified regarding outstanding physical forms, please forward necessary paperwork to the Health Office or schedule your exam today. Physical forms can be downloaded off the Hamburg School District website. With the school year winding down we will be preparing our grade 5 students for Middle School. Along with updated physicals, grade 5 students require a Tdap booster.
The end of the year comes with outside play for both recess and gym. Please send your child in appropriate footwear and clothing for the weather. The health office is unable to apply sunscreen without a doctors note. Application should be applied at home prior to school for those hot days and water bottles are always encouraged!
Remember to call the Health Office if your child will be absent for the day. We appreciate you notifying the teachers, but sometimes that message is not relayed and you will get the robo call. The answering machine is always on; please leave a detailed message and reason for absence to 716-646-3242. Send a note upon arrival back to school excusing them of their absence.

COUNSELOR'S CORNER
May/June : Humility
For our last Power Word of the 23-24 school year the Character Team will introduce the word Humility. Empathy forms the foundation of humility, and as the school year comes to a close we want to spend some time focusing on encouraging our students to understand and appreciate the feelings and experiences of others. We want to focus on fostering kindness and compassion, listening attentively, lending a helping hand, and treating everyone with respect, regardless of social status, age or background. We will help to do this with our 4 “I can” statements that will be discussed and shared daily on the morning announcements and also used during SEL activities within the classroom settings.
I CAN STATEMENTS
I can show humility when I value others' needs.
I can show humility when I am modest or don’t brag about my accomplishments.
I can show humility when I have good sportsmanship.
I can show humility when I help others and accept when I need help.

BVS Lunch Menu
Click Link to view lunch menu and for information on pre-payment options.
We look forward to serving your child this school year! Both breakfast and lunch are available each day. Please note that meals are no longer served free of charge.
Meal prices for this school year are as follows, $1.75 for breakfast and $2.50 for lunch.
We kindly ask that you consider using the My School Bucks option to pay for your child's school meals. This option also allows you to track your child's purchases in the cafeteria and will send notification when funds need replenished. If you prefer to pay with cash or a check, please send your payment to school in a sealed envelope labeled with both your child's name and his/her teacher's name, as well as the amount of the payment. Envelopes will be collected in the classroom and sent to the cafeteria.
News from the Office:
Our Main Office staff is looking forward to connecting with you this school year. When you call the Main Office, you can expect to speak with Mrs. Olmstead or Mrs. Malloy. A couple of things to keep in mind as we get the year started:
If your child will be getting on or off the bus at a location other than your home on a regular basis, you do need to submit an Alternate Site Request through your Operoo Forms Library. These requests can take up to 10-business days to process, so please be sure to submit in a timely manner.
If there is a change to your child's daily dismissal, please send a note to school with your child indicating the change. Your child will turn this note into their teacher and it will then be sent to the Main Office.
If you need to change your child's dismissal plans during the school day, please call the Main Office as early as possible for assistance.
We appreciate your understanding that we are not able to put phone calls through to classrooms during the school day when staff are teaching. If you need to speak with a teacher, we will connect you to their voicemail so that you may leave a message.
We are here for you! Please call if you have a question or need assistance.
School bus Reminders
The school bus can be a challenging environment for many of our students because it is a space that has many children and less adult supervision. We work hard to help our bus riders understand that the school bus and our bus drivers are part of our learning community. We expect students to follow the Boston Valley Learning Community expectations on the bus, just like they do in school. In particular, every rider should be using their words and actions to make the bus a great place for everyone to be. Please consider supporting our efforts by having regular conversations with your child about the bus. Here is some of the language that we use with our students to help them understand how to make the bus a great place for everyone:
Talk with your seat mates using a volume 1 voice.
Keep hands, feet, and objects to yourself.
Remain seated and facing forward, with the aisle clear for students entering and exiting the bus.
Use your words and actions to be a good role model for those around you.
If there is a problem on the bus, tell the bus driver or an adult at school.
Parents and Caregivers, if you have a concern about the bus, please call the office to speak with Mrs. Lauer. We are happy to assist you.
Important Reminders
Info for Volunteers
If you are interested in serving as a school volunteer, you need to complete the HCSD School Volunteer Training each school year. I highly recommend doing this in September so that you are ready to go as opportunities begin to pop up. Those wishing to volunteer in the classroom, at PTSA events, or to chaperone field trips must complete our school volunteer training in advance of any of these opportunites. Parents and caregivers can visit their Operoo Forms Libary to access the training, all others will need to call the main office for more information.
Birthday Treat Policy
"While we enjoy celebrating the birthdays of our Boston Valley Learning Community, we are not able to welcome birthday treats, food or non/food items, as part of the celebration. Student birthdays are recognized on our daily announcements and individual classroom teachers will share how birthdays will be celebrated in their classrooms. We are also not able to able to permit passing out birthday party invitations at school."
