Core Classes - The goal is to create a schedule for each student who has 2 core classes per semester, one is a humanities (typically social studies or English) and one is a STEM course (typically science or math). Students will take the remaining two core classes in the opposite semester.
Semester Courses - All core classes (Math, ELA, Science, and Social Studies), as well as performing arts, World Language, Interventions, Academic Seminar, and GT Research, are offered for a semester (semester one runs from September 8th through January 28th). NEW semester courses will begin at the conclusion of semester one, and run through the end of the school year.
Quarter Courses - Related Arts classes and Reading Modules are quarterly courses (45-day or one marking period); these includes Art, Music, Family and Consumer Science, Academic Seminar, Technology Education, Health, PE, Readers Cafe, Writers Cafe, Boost the Brain, 21st Century Learning, Expanding and Exploring Careers, and Digital Citizenship.
New Courses - You may notice a few new courses in your student’s schedule:
21st Century Learning is a quarter-long class that introduces students to brain development and supports the strengthening of executive functioning skills. Students explore learning digitally with lessons about organizing digital space, using email functions, and working in Google drive. It also develops study skills, such as mnemonics, note-taking, and graphic organizers.
Academic Seminar is a semester-long class that will focus on developing study skills, organizational strategies, and goal-setting.
Flex/SEL (Monday Class Only) - Between now and March 1 middle school students will have a 30-minute Flex Time period from 10:50 to 11:20 a.m. on Mondays. As of March 1, Flex time will take place for 30 minutes each Wednesday. This period is built into every student’s schedule and may be referred to as our ‘Leopard Pride’ group. This class period will be used to engage students in activities to develop social and emotional skills and support their success in school and in life. In this classroom community, students will have an opportunity to build relationships and learn and apply skills (e.g., social, organizational, self-care, etc.). When students feel connected to their schools, they not only perform better academically, they develop the emotional resilience, healthy relationship skills, and strong moral compass that serve them well their entire lives
