Parents & Prospective Cheerleaders,
Thank you for your interest in the Reservoir High School Cheerleading Program. We believe cheerleading is a rewarding and exciting sport; teaching dedication, sportsmanship and teamwork, all while promoting school spirit. Please read over this packet carefully, as it contains important information regarding tryouts as well as information if you make the team. Attendance is mandatory at all tryout dates. Please contact coaches at rehscheer@hcpss.org if an extenuating circumstance prevents you from being present. This is very important. Tryouts are closed to family and friends .Cheerleading candidates will be judged by a panel made up of cheer coaches and/or outside judge(s). At no time will the scores be presented to the candidates, parents, etc. The decisions are final. Tryouts can be stressful, so it is important that all candidates get plenty of sleep, eat regularly, and stay hydrated.
RHS Cheer has two separate seasons with separate tryouts Fall and Winter. Academic requirements must be met. You are a student first, and an athlete second. Academic eligibility to participate in extracurricular activities by maintaining a 2.0 gradepoint average (GPA), calculated using credit or noncredit courses, with no more than one failing grade for the marking period, which governs eligibility for that activity.
Fall academic eligibility for students entering Grades 10, 11, and 12 is determined by the fourth marking period grades from the preceding school year. This provision does not apply to incoming 9th grade students for fall eligibility All incoming ninth graders are academically eligible for the fall quarter.
Winter academic eligibility is determined by first quarter grades.
In addition to the academic commitment, Cheerleading is a TIME COMMITMENT and will require participation from both athletes and families. Active participation in after school practices, pep rallies, attendance at events, fundraisers, team bonding, weekly games, and competitions. Due to the fact that cheerleading is a team sport, one person’s inability to follow through on their commitment impacts the entire team. Carefully consider all commitments before trying out.
As a RHS Cheerleader you will be a representative of the school, and will be expected to adhere to a strict code of conduct, both on and off campus. Being an athlete is a privilege that carries with it responsibilities to the school, the team, the community, and other students. Athletes will conduct themselves in accordance with all policies, rules and regulations of the Howard County Public School System. Our commitment is to foster a safe, positive, and encouraging environment where everyone feels welcome. Our goal is to develop athletes into trustworthy individuals with respect towards others while training with perseverance and determination to improve their skills. We want to encourage and empower athletes to be the best version of themselves.
