The Maryland High School Diploma is awarded upon completion of 22 credits (starting with the Class of 2025) with the following coursework requirements:
4 credits -English Language Arts (English 9, 10, 11, 12)
3 credits -Social Studies (US History, American Government, Modern World History)
4 credits -Mathematics (Algebra, Geometry, 2 Higher Level Math),
3 credits - Science (3 credits in laboratory-based science that align to the Maryland Science Standards in one of each science disciplines of Earth Space Science, Life Science, and Physical Science. )
1/2 credit - Physical Education
1 credit - Health
1 credits - Fine Arts
1 credits - Technology Education
1-3 credits - Electives
2 credits - World Language (same, consecutive)
OR
3 or 4 credits - Career and Technology Education Program
Additionally, students must:
Pass all Maryland High School Assessments
Satisfy Career Preparation requirements, World of Work (WOW)
Satisfy the Student Service Learning requirement (75+ hours)
The Howard County Public School System requires that all students be given the opportunity to complete the following three instructional activities in Career Preparation:
Develop and update an individual career plan for at least two consecutive years
Participate in a job interview simulation
Complete a qualifications brief or resume acceptable for seeking employment
Career preparation activities in the junior year include an opportunity to participate in a junior interview clinic.
As mandated by the Maryland State Board of Education, all Maryland students must complete a student service requirement in order to earn a high school diploma.
Students are required to complete 75 hours in order to earn their high school diploma
For Transfer Students, hours will be prorated for those entering HCPSS for the first time in grade 10
