Equilibrium Mini-unit
Since we have already had several references to equilibrium in both Electrochemistry and Thermochemistry, it makes sense to know a little more about equilibrium. I made up this equilibrium mini unit to help you understand the basics of this very important concept.
Your assignment is to complete the following activities in order. Be sure that you are logged into your SCHOOL GOOGLE ACCOUNT to avoid any connection issues. After completing the activities you will be asked to complete a quiz to prove the knowledge you have gained from this assignment.
What is equilibrium?
Watch the video below to learn a little about equilibrium. There are questions embedded within the video that you must answer as you watch.
How do I write equilibrium expressions?
Watch the videos below to learn all about how to write equilibrium expressions. The first one is from my Honors Chemistry class and is good for basic equilibrium expression writing. The second video is a little more on the AP level and goes through several examples.
The below links will give you some practice with this concept.
CALCULATING K, THE EQUILIBRIUM CONSTANT
This page is an exercise in calculating the equilibrium constant, given the equilibrium concentrations of products and reactants.
CALCULATING AN EQUILIBRIUM CONCENTRATION
This page is an exercise in calculating an equilibrium concentration from a balanced equation, a K value, and a partial set of equilibrium concentrations.
Shifting Equilibrium
Watch the below video to learn how Le Chatelier's Principle can help predict which way a system at equilibrium will shift when subjected to various stresses.
The below website will give you some practice with shifting equilibrium
This site poses Le Chatelier's effect questions.
Q vs K
Watch the video below to learn the difference between Q and K. You will also learn the significance of that difference.
The below link will give you some practice with this concept.
This page is an exercise in comparing the equilibrium constant to the reaction quotient.
Kc, Kp, and how to convert from one to the other
Watch the video below to learn the difference between Kc and Kp. You will also learn how to convert from one to the other. Have a piece of paper and a calculator handy for this one!
The below link will give you some practice with this concept.
RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN Kp AND Kc
This page is an exercise in converting between Kp and Kc
Thermo and Equilibrium
Watch the video below to help relate the concept of equilibrium with the thermodynamics we have been studying in class.
Quiz Time!
After you have completed all of the activities above and practiced your new skills, it is time to prove what you have learned. You will want to have a piece of paper and a calculator handy as you begin. Each question is timed (from 30 seconds to 3 minutes, depending on the question). Your score on this quiz will count as a quiz grade.
