Beginnings
The Raider Writing Center began in 2016 as a vision of English teacher Mrs. Christina Dobson, who collaborated with AHS English teacher Mrs. Kelly Pace on the project. The writing center opened in October of 2016 as a "trial" to see if it would work. Students (mostly seniors) volunteered to stay in Room 211 during their lunches to tutor students.

A Curriculum
The writing center continued the following year with Mrs. Dobson and Mrs. Pace developing a class called Composition Theory. That year, they piloted the course. Later that year, they marketed the class to solicit school board approval. In 2018-2019, the course became an official course in the HCPS Program of Studies.
Accomplishments
Over the years, the writing center tutors have participated in the CAPTA Writing Conference (now known as SSWCA). They have tutored hundreds of Raiders, developed mini lessons for teachers, held numerous workshops including a college essay workshop, SAT workshop, and scientific writing workshop. Three of our tutors were accepted to present at the SSWCA Conference in the spring of 2020. Unfortunately, they did not get to present due to COVID-19 shutting down schools.

Awards
In 2019, Mrs. Dobson was awarded the HCPS Innovator of the Year for establishing the writing center at Atlee High School. Mrs. Dobson had a writing center at her previous high school and used that vision to collaborate with Mrs. Pace to open the Raider Writing Center at Atlee High School.

Recent Years
In 2019-2020, Mrs. Abbey Williams taught Composition Theory and she and Mrs. Pace ran the writing center. Sadly, we didn't see a full year of the center because on March 13, 2020, COVID-19 shut down school. The writing center was closed the following school year but is open for the 2024-2025 school year under the direction of Mrs. Kelly Pace and Mrs. Laci Whitlow.
