The student will investigate and understand that there are common mechanisms for inheritance. Key ideas include
A. DNA has structure and is the foundation for protein synthesis;
B. the structural model of DNA has developed over time;
C. the variety of traits in an organism are the result of the expression of various combinations of alleles;
D. meiosis has a role in genetic variation between generations; and
E. synthetic biology has biological and ethical implications.
Central Idea: Traits of living things are influenced by genetic makeup and can be predicted using genetic information. Genetic information can be determined and altered through synthetic means.
Digital Learning Integration Standards (DLI):
Students leverage technologies, including assistive technologies, to take an active role in choosing, achieving, and demonstrating competency in their learning goals, informed by the learning sciences
In this standard students will:
A. set personal learning goals, develop strategies, advocate for the appropriate technologies and reflect.
B. customize and build their learning community and environments to support the learning process.
C. seek feedback and make changes to improve and demonstrate their learning.
D. understand the use of appropriate technologies; demonstrate the ability to choose, use, and troubleshoot.
Health and Safety Standards:
DEFINITION: Students who are socially fluent in English but still struggle with the technical and abstract language of the classroom.
Instructional Strategies:
Explicit Academic Vocabulary: Pre-teach the "Mortar" words (the words that hold sentences together) not just the "Bricks" (the objects).
Structured Peer Discussion: Use "Think-Pair-Share" with required sentence frames to practice academic talk.
Bilingual Supports: Use primary language dictionaries or peer-collaboration to bridge "conceptual gaps."
