CURRENT PROJECTS
Rhythmic patterning of Vietnamese quadrisyllabic reduplicative words
My study investigates the rhythmic pattern of Vietnamese quadrisyllabic words. I am interested in finding whether stress and prominence exists in the language and how it is patterned. I am also engaged in answering the question regarding the Vietnamese prosodic hierarchy. My findings are expected to provide valuable insights into the debate on stress, prominence and prosodic units above the syllable level in Vietnamese.
Constituent ordering preferences in Vietnamese coordinative compounds
The coordinative nature of Vietnamese coordinative compounds may allow either ordering of their constituents. However, in usage, a weak ordering preference is observed for some compounds whereas a strong one is observed for others. Therefore, I am interested in the factors that determine the variability in such ordering preferences. I focus on the relation between generalized knowledge and item-specific knowledge in variable constituent ordering of Vietnamese coordinative compounds. Specifically, in the first phase, I examine general constraints and item frequency. In the second phase, I explore semantic transparency/opacity.
