Types of Applications
Regular - Regular decision is the standard way for students to apply to college, with deadlines that are usually in December or January, and admission deicision typically coming out in March or April. Students are not obligated to make a decision about whearther to attend until the standard response date of May 1.
Early Decision - Early decision (ED) is a binding agreement that allows students to apply to a college early and committ to attendingg if accepted. ED is a good option for students who have a clear top choice school and what to show their committment to it.
Early Action - Early action is a college admission process that allows students to apply and receive a decision earlier than the regular application deadline. Early action applications are usually non-binding, meaning students are not required to commit to a college if accepted.
What is Federal Student Aid? Federal student aid comes from the federal government - specifically the Department of Education. It's money that helps a student pay for education expenses at a college, career school, or graduate school.
Federal student aid covers such expenses as tuition and fees, room and board, book and supplies, and transportation. Aid also can help pay for a computer and for dependent care.
There are three main categories of federal student aid:
Grant - Grant money usually doesn't have to be repaid. Most U.S. Deptartment of Education grants are based on a student's financial need.
Work-Study - Work-study is earned by a student through a job on or near campus while attending school and does not have to be repaid.
Loan - Loan money must be repaid with interest.
