For more than a century, students with dyslexia have been relegated to the sidelines of academia. Locked out by the primacy of text-based learning, dyslexics have internalized the failure of a constrained educational system, resulting in their mass incarceration, underemployment, and addiction.
A new age of dyslexia is upon us. The proliferation of EdTech, an emphasis on social-emotional learning, and a global marketplace that demands ingenuity have begun to level the playing field for individuals with dyslexia. Dean Bragonier, Founder and Executive Dyslexic of NoticeAbility, shares his personal journey and illustrates how highlighting the cognitive advantages of dyslexia and students' emotional development will empower the individual and benefit society at large.
Dr. Cheryl Chase is an experienced clinical psychologist, dynamic college instructor, nationally recognized speaker—and the mother of three children. It’s that last designation that just might set her apart from other practitioners in the field.
Dr. Chase deeply understands what parents, educators and children struggling with executive functioning issues and other learning challenges are facing. That’s why she developed the “Chasing Your Potential” educational portal. She saw an urgent need for a comprehensive resource that would supply answers, information and training. But she also recognized—in order for it to work—it not only had to be informative, but easy to follow, stimulating and fun!

Addressing the Social-Emotional Challenges of Learning and Attention Issues: Learned helplessness and a growth mindset Workshop ID#345805
Children with learning and attention challenges, because they face many obstacles, are vulnerable to developing a belief that their success or failure in school is controlled by external forces such as luck or chance, rather than by their own efforts. This can lead to the development of a condition known as learned helplessness, a powerful psychological situation in which the child displays a passive resignation to events and circumstances around him or her, and no longer puts forth effort. For example, repeated struggles with reading can lead the child to stop trying. Once learned helplessness has developed, traditional reading interventions can fail to produce gains, but for reasons not often appreciated. This talk will describe learned helplessness, connect it to children with learning challenges, introduce the notion of a growth mindset, and offer strategies to encourage a growth mindset and discourage learned helplessness. This session is designed for educators and parents.
