Professional Development Overview
Harris County Department of Education offers a Texas Virtual School Network (TXVSN) - approved professional development course for teachers who are new to online instruction and also for teachers who are experienced online instructors. The 30-hour Online Instructor Training course is fully online and self-paced.
Participants will earn 30 CPE hours after completing six sections that cover The National Standards for Quality Online Teaching. The sections are broken into the following eight standard categories:
Standard A: Professional Responsibilities
Standard B: Digital Pedagogy
Standard C: Community Building
Standard D: Learner Engagement
Standard E: Digital Citizenship
Standard F: Diverse Instruction
Standard G: Assessment and Measurement
Standard H: Instructional Design

Course Outcomes
Expand learning experiences that demonstrate understanding of the foundation of online instruction
Recognize the importance of promoting clear expectations while nurturing learner relationships success.

Key Partnerships
Texas Education Agency (TEA) has established key partnerships to implement critical functions of the Texas Virtual School Network (TXVSN), including professional development for teaching online. Prior to teaching courses offered via the TXVSN, instructors are required to successfully complete TXVSN-approved professional development that specifically focuses on learning to teach effectively in the online environment. Information about course offerings, professional development, and participation in the TXVSN is available online at http://www.txvsn.org.
