HOUSEHOLD PROGRAM
The Household Program is an initative of the Archdiocese of Halifax-Yarmouth through the Vocations Office and supported by Holy Cross Chaplaincy. Households are small communities where young adults live together around a shared Rule of Life. They are designed so that young adults can grow through communal discipleship and receive support as they discern a vocation.
HOUSEHOLD RULE OF LIFE
Household life is based around several key commitments that taken together can be considered a communal Rule of Life.
VOCATIONAL DISCERNMENT
One of the primary purposes of household life is to discern a vocation and career. Throughout their participation in the program, household members take time to pray into and discern how God is calling them to put their love of Him and others into practice.
PERSONAL & COMMUNAL PRAYER
Prayer is the backbone of all household life. Household members are expected to pray regularly through two key rhythms:
House Prayer Monday through Friday, praying Morning Prayer from the Breviary
Personal Prayer every day, usually with Scripture
HOUSEHOLD RELATIONSHIPS
Discipleship is an undertaking that occurs primarily in the context of community. All household members are expected to invest in their household relationships in a few key ways:
Weekly House Time (3-4 hours)
1on1 relationship building through conversation and fun activities
Intentional conflict resolution
Chores, meals, and shared upkeep of the house
For the purpose of relationship building, all household members are expected to share and split the cost of groceries and other household supplies.
FORMATION & MENTORSHIP
Ongoing formation and mentorship helps to guide household members. We provide formation and mentorship in a few key ways:
An opening and closing weekend retreat (and a midyear evening retreat)
Monthly 1on1s with an assigned mentor from the broader Catholic community
Monthly formation nights (replacing house time for that week)
Tools and resources for living the Liturgical year together
PARISH LIFE & MINISTRY
Ultimately, our hope is that participation in household life would be a springboard into participation in Parish Life. For that reason, there are a few commitments household members keep to help them integrate into a local Parish community:
Weekly attendance at Holy Mass, in the same Parish most weeks
Monthly confession
Participation at least monthly in a Parish ministry of the member's choosing

BOOKING HOUSEHOLDS FOR EVENTS
From time to time, external groups may host events in the households. This can be a great way to engage the household community and the broader young adult community of the Archdiocese. In order to preserve the community life and restful atmosphere of the homes, we ask that you fill out this booking request form so we can carefully discern whether or not we can accomodate.
