Elective Focus: 3 credits
This is sometimes called your “cluster.” An elective focus is just three elective classes in the same subject area.
For example, if you enjoy engineering, you can take three engineering classes, and that would be your elective focus.
Fine Arts: 1 credit
You can take a Visual Art, Band, Choir, or a Theatre Arts class for this requirement
Foreign Language: 2 credits
You can take either Spanish I and II or
French I and II for this requirement.
Note: According to the Tennessee Department of Education, your fine arts and foreign language requirements “may be waived by the local school district for students, under certain circumstances, to expand and enhance the elective focus.” Talk to your school counselor if this option interests you.
Personal Finance*:
0.5 credits
This class is usually combined with Economics,
and you take it as a senior.
* Three years of JROTC may exempt you from the Personal Finance requirement.
Wellness & Physical Education*:
1.5 credits
For this requirement, most people take
Lifetime Wellness their freshman year and Weightlifting sometime in the next 3 years.
* Documented participation in marching band, sports, JROTC, or other approved physical activities may exempt you from the 0.5 credits in Physical Education.
In addition to your required classes, students are required to take the ACT and pass the Civics Test to graduate.
You can graduate with Honors, Distinction, or both.
Graduating with Honors is based solely on your ACT Scores.
Graduating with Distinction is a little more complex, but there are many ways to do it.
First, you must have a Grade Point Average (GPA) of 3.0 or higher.
To graduate with Honors, you must score at or above these benchmark scores on your ACT. You may retake your ACT to improve your scores.
English—18
Math—22
Reading—22
Science—23
In addition to the 3.0+ GPA, you can graduate with Distinction if you complete at least one of the following:
Earn a nationally recognized industry certification
Participate in a Governor’s School
Place at the top levels in a State Competition
Be selected as a National Merit Finalist
Earn a composite score of 31+ on the ACT
Earn a score of 3 or higher on at least 2 AP exams
Complete the International Baccalaureate Diploma Program
Earn 12 or more semester hours of college credit
Especially if you are interested in going into the workforce or attending the Tennessee College of Applied Technology (TCAT) after graduation, you should talk to your school counselor about earning a Work Ethic Diploma. It shows that you have the skills needed to enter the workforce and guarantees an interview with participating companies.
You also get a blue cord to wear at graduation.
Click HERE to see how to earn points toward your Work Ethic Diploma.
You can earn several of these points before your senior year.
Colleges and universities are expensive, and the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is a way to get you some money to pay for education. You must fill this out online to be eligible for TN Promise and any financial assistance for TCAT, community college, or university.
The FAFSA gives you access to 3 types of aid:
Grants & Scholarships
(Money that you don’t have to pay back)
Work-Study Jobs
(A part-time job on campus that helps pay for school)
Student Loans
(Money that you have to pay back, usually after you graduate)
Once you’re in school, you have to fill out the FAFSA each year to keep
your eligibility for grants, scholarships, loans, and work study jobs.
Tennessee Promise is a scholarship program that covers the cost of tuition for two-year programs at TCAT and community colleges in Tennessee. It’s a “last dollar scholarship,” meaning that it pays for costs not already covered by other scholarships or grants.
As a senior, listen for announcements and visit the counseling office
to make sure you’re meeting the deadlines for applications, etc.
Click HERE for the Class of 2023 TN Promise deadlines.
You will also be assigned a TN Promise Mentor.
You must go to the mandatory TN Promise meetings during your senior year or you will lose your scholarship.
Once you’re in school, you have to be enrolled full time, maintain a GPA of 2.0 or higher,
and complete 8 hours of community service per semester.
The HOPE Scholarship is funded by the Tennessee Lottery. It is a scholarship awarded to
graduating seniors who plan to go to a community college or university in Tennessee.
To be eligible, you must:
Be a TN resident for at least a year
Have a 3.0 GPA or higher
Earn a score of 21 or higher on the ACT
Enroll in a college or university that accepts the HOPE Scholarship
Once you’re in school, you must maintain a GPA of 3.0 or higher and
only take classes that help you progress toward your degree.
The Tennessee College of Applied Technology offers programs in machinery, automotive,
graphic design, cosmetology, HVAC, computer science, electricity, welding, and more.

Each branch of the military has its own specific requirements, so if you are interested, you should talk with a recruiter for the branch you’re interested in joining. You may also want to enroll in the Air Force JROTC program here at East High to gain military knowledge and leadership experience.
You can enlist at age 17 with parental consent or at age 18+ without parental consent.
You must have a high school diploma.
