The 2021 Chief of Staff of the Air Force (CSAF) Private Pilot Scholarship Program (AFJROTC Flight Academy) will begin accepting applications on 8 September – 13 November 2020. The Air Force is funding scholarships for AFJROTC cadets to attend private pilot training at public/private universities during the summer of 2021. Instructors “should” nominate and submit applications for all eligible, highly motivated cadets for the AFJROTC Flight Academy Scholarship. Complete packages may be submitted any time during the application window but no later than the suspense date. Extensions will not be granted beyond the deadline.
Selected cadets will be identified through a competitive boarding process. The scholarship will pay for round-trip airfare, room and board, collegiate academics, and flight hours required to potentially earn a private pilot’s certificate (PPC) through an in-residence collegiate program that is approximately eight (8) weeks in length.
Applicants must be current sophomore, junior, or senior AFJROTC cadets (active or reserve status), who understand they are volunteering for a scholarship to a public/private university. There is no military service commitment or obligation, nor does program completion justify acceptance to military service, ROTC scholarship, or military academy appointment. Applicants must be at least 17 years old by 9 July 2021, obtain a minimum fitness assessment score of 50, and have a minimum and maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better (on a 4.0 scale) to be nominated. Please know the minimum fitness assessment score has increased from 40 to 50 to enhance cadet’s potential opportunity to compete for other Air Force scholarship programs. Lastly, applicants must have a “strong” interest in aviation and a “never-quit” attitude.
Cadets/instructors must complete an application via WINGS and have parental/legal guardian signed approval. Cadets must complete an online aviation qualification test (AQT) comprised of five (5) sub-tests of the following: math, table reading, aviation information, instrument comprehension, and weight perception. The AQT testing window will open between 14 Sep – 13 Nov 20. Cadets can be administered the AQT only once. An AQT practice website has been created at www.aqtpractice.com. Feel free to visit this website and provide the link to interested cadets immediately. They may take this practice test as many times as they wish.
NOTE: The AQT must remain proctored for testing integrity, and instructors will serve as exam proctors. Cadets and instructors must coordinate to schedule the date and time for testing at the school site. The Air Force prohibits at-home testing as a testing site location. With the heightened concerns of COVID-19, instructors and cadets must adhere to state and local guidance for COVID-19 awareness and protective measures, as well as practice social distancing while administering AQT.
Additionally, cadets must have a current PFT score, and endorsements from the Senior Aerospace Science Instructor (SASI) and principal or counselor. In order to ensure a complete application, please follow the detailed application instructions and upload all supporting documents in WINGS.
The Flight Academy Program’s intentions are to implement according to the provided timeline; however, please know these dates are subject to change. If there are any application questions, please email HQ-FlightTrainingPgm@afjrotc.com and email all WINGS-related questions to the Help Desk.
*Any late/missing documentation will render the application void and will not meet the board*
The official notification will be distributed on Monday, 31 August 2020, for your review and action. Please note that extensions will not be granted beyond the deadline; thereby, immediate action is imperative to ensure cadets’ application is submitted accurately.
