Harcourt Butler Technical University (HBTU), Kanpur, formerly Harcourt Butler Technological Institute, was established in 1920 as the Government Research Institute, Cawnpore, by Sir Spencer Harcourt Butler. It was renamed as Government Technical Institute in 1921 and became HBTI in 1926. The institute was granted autonomy in 1965 and upgraded to a university in 2016 under Act No. 11. HBTU focuses on industrial development, applied research, and innovation in Engineering, Technology, Basic & Applied Sciences, Humanities, and Management. The university is spread into two campuses and there are five schools offering UG, PG, and Ph.D. programs. Four departments - Civil, Mechanical, Electronics, and Chemical Engineering-are QIP-recognized for Ph.D. programs. HBTU promotes skill development through continuing education programs and has received World Bank aid (TEQIP–I, II, III) for various developmental initiatives.
