More than twenty years ago, Middle School director Nancy West created the WEST Fellowship program. With her background in gifted and talented education, Ms. West envisioned a program that would foster the passions of middle school students in areas beyond the standard curriculum. Although the curricula offered at the seventh and eighth grades levels at Hathaway Brown is challenging and enriching, she felt it was crucial for the school to provide opportunities for young women to explore and develop their talents and interests. The founding director, Dr. Glenn Looman, gave the program its original name, Women Engaged in Scholarly Thought, to reflect its mission. Later, in honor of Ms. West, the name was changed to simply the WEST Fellowship.
With the guidance of a mentor and the financial backing of the WEST program, more than 400 Fellows have pursued their passions and shared their accomplishments with the Hathaway Brown community. Their projects have spanned the globe and inspire future students to reach beyond the classroom.
