Head Band Director
Johanna Balboa is entering her ninth year of teaching and is excited to be joining Chapa Middle School as Head Band Director. She will be directing the Wind Ensemble, assist with Symphonic Band, and teach all beginner woodwind classes.
Prior to joining Chapa Middle School, Ms. Balboa was the assistant band director in Fredericksburg ISD at both the middle and high school campuses. During her tenure at Fredericksburg, her bands consistently earned Superior Ratings at UIL Evaluations, and achieved Outstanding Performing Series State Finalist in 2024 and 2025. Before her time in Fredericksburg, Ms. Balboa taught in Fort Stockton ISD.
Ms. Balboa is a San Antonio native and an alumnus of John Paul Stevens High School. She earned her Bachelor of Music Education degree from West Texas A&M University, where she studied under Don Lefevre, Russ Teweleit, and Helen Blackburn.
Ms. Balboa is an active member of the Texas Music Educators Association, Texas Bandmasters Association and Association of Texas Small School Bands. Outside of teaching, she enjoys traveling, running, hiking, and spending time with her dachshund, Winnie, and her boyfriend, who is also a band director in the area.

Assistant Band Director
Mr. Cano is entering his first year as the Chapa Middle School Assistant Band Director, teaching beginning brass and the Symphonic Band.
From Kyle, TX, Mr. Cano got his Bachelors degree in Music Studies with an Instrumental Emphasis from Texas State University in San Marcos Texas. During his time at Texas State, Mr. Cano performed in many different ensembles as a trumpet player including the Bobcat Marching Band, Mariachi Nueva Generacion, Salsa Del Rio, Jazz Orchestra, Symphonic Winds and different chamber ensembles like brass quintets and trumpet ensembles. He studied under the direction of great brass pedagogues like Robert Cannon and Keith Winking. Before graduating from Texas State, he completed his clinical teaching at Lehman High-school with and Tom Green Elementary School here in Hays CISD.
During his spare time, Mr. Cano’s hobbies include biking, playing video games, watching football, and spending time with his close friends, family, and 2 dogs.
Mr. Cano is incredibly excited to return back to the area he grew up in and give back to the community! He’s looking forward to creating long lasting musical memories.
