Head Band Director
Yvanna B. Reyes is a professional music educator with over 11 years of experience teaching in Texas public schools. Known for her passion, dedication, and leadership in band education, Ms. Reyes has served in various capacities, including Head Band Director, where she has consistently guided students to musical and personal success.
Ms. Reyes began her teaching career in 2012 at Harlingen High School in Harlingen CISD. During her five-year tenure, she helped lead ensembles to multiple UIL Sweepstakes Awards and marching band to high-ranking performances at state and regional competitions, including the UIL 6A State Marching Contest and Bands of America Regionals. Her students consistently earned placements in TMEA Region, Area, and All-State ensembles, and the program received district-wide recognition.
From 2017 to 2021, Ms. Reyes served as Head Band Director at Dessau Middle School in Pflugerville ISD. Under her leadership, the band achieved Superior First Division Ratings at UIL Concert & Sight-Reading, including Sweepstakes. She also implemented a private lesson program, maintained a strong recruitment and retention pipeline, and taught beginner woodwinds and the advanced Varsity Wind Ensemble. Her program management and community engagement created a positive culture among the band program.
Currently, Ms. Reyes will be entering the 2025-2026 school year in her new role as the Head Band Director at Chapa Middle School. As the Assistant Band Director, she taught the Symphonic Band, beginner woodwind classes, and sectional instruction to all woodwind students 6th-8th. Her ensembles continue to receive UIL Sweepstakes recognition, and her students have earned top placements in the TMEA Region 18 Band. She is also involved in supporting the Lehman High School marching band, building vertical team alignment across grades 6–12, and integrating the district’s instructional playbook into daily teaching.
Ms. Reyes is certified in K–12 Music Education and has held several leadership roles within TMEA, including Region Band Organizer and Band Division Secretary. A proud alumna of VanderCook College of Music in Chicago, she earned her Bachelor of Music Education as a Dean’s List Scholar and Talent Scholarship recipient.
Assistant Band Director
Mr. Cano is entering his first year as the Chapa Middle School Assistant Band Director, teaching beginning brass and the Symphonic Band.
From Kyle, TX, Mr. Cano got his Bachelors degree in Music Studies with an Instrumental Emphasis from Texas State University in San Marcos Texas. During his time at Texas State, Mr. Cano performed in many different ensembles as a trumpet player including the Bobcat Marching Band, Mariachi Nueva Generacion, Salsa Del Rio, Jazz Orchestra, Symphonic Winds and different chamber ensembles like brass quintets and trumpet ensembles. He studied under the direction of great brass pedagogues like Robert Cannon and Keith Winking. Before graduating from Texas State, he completed his clinical teaching at Lehman High-school with and Tom Green Elementary School here in Hays CISD.
During his spare time, Mr. Cano’s hobbies include biking, playing video games, watching football, and spending time with his close friends, family, and 2 dogs.
Mr. Cano is incredibly excited to return back to the area he grew up in and give back to the community! He’s looking forward to creating long lasting musical memories.
Assistant Band Director (Percussion)
Angelina Martinez is the Percussion Director at Chapa and Simon Middle School. Ms. Martinez works with all percussion grades 6-8, she also assists the varsity and non-varsity concert ensembles. In addition to her middle school duties, she also co-teaches the percussion program at Lehman High School. Throughout her time, the percussion ensembles have accomplished awards in concert and marching.
Originally from San Antonio, TX, Ms. Martinez received her bachelor’s degree in music education from The University of Texas at San Antonio. She studied under the instruction of Ben Pyles, Sherry Rubins, Ron Ellis, and John Zarco. While attending UTSA, she performed as the principal percussionist of the Wind Ensemble and Orchestra. Ms. Martinez was also active in the marching arts, performing with UTSA Indoor and Monarch Independent. Before graduating from UTSA, she completed her clinical teaching at Claudia Taylor Johnson High School, and Jose M. Lopez Middle School in San Antonio, TX.
Ms Martinez is excited to welcome the new school year. She cherishes witnessing student growth throughout the year, not just in their musical path, but in the life-long lessons, disciplines, and leadership skills taken away with them learned through music and being a part of the band organization.
