Blue Bird Box

Bird Box Installation

By: Spencer Baniszewski and Evan McDaniel

In Bio Barn Raising the bird box installation group started on Monday, May 17th. They set up 8 bird boxes around the Hawken School property. Including some by the Green Trail near the pond and some closer to County Line Rd. To make the process of carrying the boxes and tools they used, they built a wagon. “The wagons were very efficient in transporting the equipment and made the job a lot easier.” said one of the group members.

At the beginning of the day things were moving slow for the group due to a lack of equipment and the weather, but after lunch the group gained a few members and some tools which increased productivity. Another challenge the group faced was how they should place the bird boxes. They knew they should be in pairs about one hundred yards apart to avoid conflicts with other birds and certain animals such as squirrels, chipmunks, etc. Using maps and the coordinates of the boxes, they were able to strategically place the boxes in the correct positions. The position of the boxes is really important for the well being of the birds. The group knew they should face the boxes east because of the positioning of the sun. It was also important to consider the area in which they placed the bird boxes. They should be in an open area close to trees, so they get the correct amount of sunlight and they can fly to nearby trees. At the end of the day while there is noty too much creativity related to this job the group members were happy that they could have a positive effect on the outdoor learning experience and the population of BlueBirds.
