Intro to Design

This is something I drew in 4th grade.

Introduction

My name is Eason Liang. I signed up for this course because I like building hands on projects. I also enjoyed most of the classes that I took in the innovation lab.

I would like to build a small sailboat or something small I can display in my bedroom, like a night lamp.

I have had some experience with woodworking from middle school, but I have not really used electric saws.

I think I am good at problem solving and working in groups.

Mark Rober is a designer I like. He creates a lot of cool projects which are interesting to me.

Sketch Book

These are the first sketchs I have made in the sketch book. They include the cover of my book, a sketch of the FabLab, and a sketch of the campus. I am excited to get better at drafting and sketching in the future.

Daily Design - Circles

In this daily design, we learned how to create a circle without a compass or other tool. We first learned how to create a circle by ghosting. We moved our hands in a circular motion until we got the feel for the circle and then pressed down. This was a quick way to make a circle but was hard to make exact. We then created circles by inscribing them in squares. This made much more exact circles. Finally, we drew a design in each of the circles. I learned how to draw some pretty good circles and also learned how hard it is to come up with twenty four designs form just one shape.

16 Types of One Letter

In this activity, we drew sixteen different versions one letter. I decided to go with L for Liang. This challenged me to go beyond just a simple L. I experimented with shapes, textures, and sizes. Some of the designs were real objects, and others came from things I like. I again learned how hard it could be to be creative. This activity was also fun because it gave me time to draw and experiment and challenge myself to make something creative.

Initials Sketches

In this activity, I created many different sketches of my initials. I first created twenty one different rough drafts to get all my ideas down. I then narrowed it down to just three designs. Finally I chose the design where the L overlapped the E. This was my favorite because it was simple, but still completely different from how I normally write it. This was interesting because I was able to create all of these cool designs from just two letters.

Logo Design

These are my sketches for creating a logo. I first created a list of things that I like and adjectives that describe me. Using this list, I generated a page of sketches. I then selected my top three and chose the one that best represented me. Before we started sketching, I learned a bit about logo design. I learned how to use negative space and shapes to create simple, yet meaningful logos. Logos should tell a story.

These were my top three designs. The first has a tree in the space between the E & L. The Second has an E nested in a L with mountains making the E shape.

Logo Final Design

This is my final design for my logo. It is a L with a key fitted into it. The negative space between the L and the key form an E when combined with the L shape. I got inspiration for this from my final Initials Sketch.

I think that this logo is a good representation of me because I love solving puzzles. Whether it's puzzle boxes, escape rooms, math problems, cryptology, or puzzle games, problem-solving has always been one of my favorite hobbies. This logo represents finding the key or solution to a lock or problem.

This also represents my design process. I will try many different approaches, and keep testing and iterating until I get to a final result, just like how cryptanalyst break a code.

Adobe Illustrator - 2B

On the right is one of my first creations in Adobe Illustrator. I learned how to create shapes, manipulate them, and use the pathfinder. This is my first time using Adobe Illustrator, so it was interesting to learn another way to create designs.

Adobe Illustrator - Keychain

This is my first time using the laser cutter in the FAB Lab. I first created a design in Adobe Illustrator. This used thin red lines representing cutting, black for engraving, and grey for lightly engraving. I then learned how a laser printer works, what laser actually means, and some safety. Finally, I sent the design to the laser cutter and used it for the first time. This was a fun way to learn how to use a laser cutter and also gave me a keychain, something I like collecting.

Adobe Illustrator - Name Stand

This is my second laser cutting project. I learned how to use the grid in Adobe Illustrator to create the stand and tabs for my name stand without having to set the length and width for each shape. Once I designed the stand, I used the laser cutter to cut out my stand. During this activity, I practiced using Adobe Illustrator and setting up and using the laser cutter.
