Intro to Design

Introduction

I signed up for this course so I can learn more about fabrication.

I really want to learn how to use the CNC machine.

I recently built a chicken coop and a set of raised beds for planting tomatoes.

One thing you should know about me is that I like group work.

My favorite designer is Frank Lloyd Wright, the architect behind Falling Water.

Sketch Book

These are sketches from my first and second weeks in my Intro to Design and Fabrication class. They are, the cover to my sketchbook, a sketch of the Hawken Fablab, and a Sketch of the Hawken Gates Mills Campus. I really liked the sketch of the Fablab because it let me see what it looks like with all of the machines gone.

Daily design-Circles

For this project, we tried to make perfect circles. We tried two methods: using ghosting hand movements and inscribing them in squares. We then made designs inside the circles, going for quantity over quality. When doing this project, I learned how to draw a perfect circle and developed the skill of going for quantity while still having decent quality. I really enjoyed this exercise because it was fun to think of ideas for what to put in the circles.

16 types of one letter

For this project, we had to come up with 16 designs for one letter. In doing this project, I learned how to stretch my creative thinking to its maximum by having to think of designs for 16 letters. I really enjoyed this challenge because it was fun to think of designs, especially for the last 4 letters. This was challenging but fun.

This is the 16 types of one letter chalange where you have to think of 16 diferent ways you can draw/write a letter. For my letter I chose C.

Logos

For this project, we made many versions of our initials as logos and practiced quantity over quality to brain-dump as many logos as possible. Then we narrowed it down to three of our favorites and then narrowed it down to one.

Final Logos

For our final logo design we repeated what we did with our logo initials. We brain-dumped a bunch of ideas, narrowed it down to three, narrowed it down further to one, finally, we redid our favorite on a white sheet of paper.

Adobe #1

For this project, we learned how to create shapes, overlap them, and edit their proportions. Here we overlapped a circle and a square. In doing this, I learned how to use the Pathfinder tool.

My first Adobe Project

Adobe Keychain

For this project, we designed a keychain with our first and last names on it. Then we cut it out in the laser cutter. We learned that red lines mean that the laser cutter will cut, black is a deep etch, and gray is a shallow etch. In doing this, I learned how to use the laser cutter.

Name Stand

For this project, we created a name plate and a stand. It was challenging to make the slots in hte stand exactly the same size as the wood thickness, but the use of the snap-to-grid feature of Adobe Illustrator made this easier. In doing this project, I have become more comfortable with the laser cutter.
