Students must be enrolled full-time in a Hawaii DOE or charter school in order to take Hawaii Online Courses (HOC).
Students must consult with their Counselor or Site Facilitator at their primary school to discuss and select appropriate courses. The school will then register students for their chosen courses through the online registration system.
Students may take up to two HOC courses a semester.
Middle school students may register for only Math and World Language courses with the approval of the primary school.
Site Facilitators are encouraged to consult with HOC instructors before registration to ensure the course content and placement are suitable for the student.
Students must be self-motivated, as the courses are rigorous and require significant time and effort outside of regular school hours.
Students must attend mandatory online meetings as scheduled by instructors, which are typically held in the evenings.
All new students are required to complete the mandatory Student Orientation course by the deadline provided in their registration confirmation. Students who have previously passed the orientation are exempt from this requirement. Access to the Student Orientation is only available to students who are registered or waitlisted for a course.
Students will be dropped from this program if they do not pass the Student Orientation.
Students have up to three weeks from the start of the session to drop a course. For yearlong courses, this three-week grace period applies only during the first semester. After this period, students are no longer permitted to drop the course and must remain enrolled until the session concludes, receiving the grade earned. Final grades will be recorded on the official DOE transcript.
