In April 1970, UH students and professors held sit-in demonstrations at the Air Force ROTC buildings, which would eventually include the Army ROTC buildings. One of the participating professors, Oliver Lee, had his tenure rescinded which caused a scandal. As a result, UH president Thomas H. Hamilton resigned. Other professors were fired, and thus began a lengthy legal battle to reinstate the professors, as well as review of policies regarding freedom of speech for students and staff at UH.
On the night of Friday, February 26, 1971, an Army ROTC building was deliberately set on fire as an act of war protest. The program lost equipment, uniforms, weapons, supply records, photo albums, books, and about 30 ROTC trophies. The perpetrators were caught and sentenced to prison.
