The placement exam is only for students that have NOT previously studied Spanish at UH.
The UH Mānoa placement exam is only for students beginning Spanish coursework at UH Mānoa.
The placement exam may be taken only once and cannot be used to skip levels or be used for any other institution at the UH system or for any study abroad program.
The exam cannot be used to obtain credits or grant language waivers for Spanish from UHM. Credits or waivers can only be granted through further assessments.
The exam takes about 20-30 min. to complete depending on your level.
If you took the exam in the last 6 months, contact us to request a new code for the UH system (benitoq@hawaii.edu or LLEA464@hawaii.edu).
Continuing UH system Spanish students should proceed to the next higher course in the sequence (101, 102, 201, 202). See the Spanish Division chair (Benito Quintana benitoq@hawaii.edu) for assistance or questions.
Students with no prior Spanish language experience may enroll in SPAN 101. Students with prior Spanish language experience (i.e., high school instruction, contact with native speakers, etc.), must take the placement exam.
The placement exam is a diagnostic tool. It does not satisfy or waive UH Mānoa Hawaiian/Second Language (H/SL) requirements. It is in the student’s best interest to do well on the placement exam and possibly reduce the number of courses needed to satisfy UHM H/SL. Guidance will be given after completion of the placement exam.
If you do not register the same semester that you took the placement exam, you need to request an authorization again when you are ready to register. Placement exam results are only valid for one term.
For other registration questions contact the Spanish & Latin American Studies Division Head, Benito Quintana, (benitoq@hawaii.edu)
