In 2018, the host committee from Manoa established awards honoring two beloved members of our University of Hawaii community.
These awards recognize the significant contributions to the success of Filipina/os in Education through mentoring, leadership, and support.
Dr. Niki Libarios was the Director of the Office of Student Academic Services at the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa College of Education. A former academic advisor, community college counselor, and elementary school teacher, his research interests centered on Filipino recruitment, persistence, and community college transfer in higher education. In all of his work, Dr. Libarios lived by the motto #BeKindToAStudent. Having been a community college transfer student himself, he believed in paying it forward through kindness and empowerment.
Julius Bajet Soria, PhD (Curriculum and Instruction, College of Education, University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa, 2012) was a keeper of our language and culture, Julius was committed to promoting an understanding of Filipinos, which he modeled through his words and actions. He is remembered as a valiant advocate for Ilokano heritage language and a strong voice for education, not just in Hawai’i, but globally. Julius was a wonderful educator with a kind heart and gentle demeanor, along with intelligence, passion, and care.
