If you are a current or potential UH Community College student interested in learning about Native Hawaiian scholarships and exciting STEʻĀM related jobs, please join Nā Hokua by applying for our scholarship or signing up for our upcoming Zoom workshops. Our team of coaches and peer mentors offers support for educational and career goals. We also host information sessions with experts about STEʻĀM, career opportunities, scholarships, and other resources to support your success in college and beyond.
What does STEʻAM mean to us? Science, Technology, Engineering, ʻĀina, and Math. These are the hottest areas of job growth and highest paying careers according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
Nā Hokua is a University of Hawaiʻi (UH) College of Education project funded by the US DOE Native Hawaiian Education Program since 2018. Our current three year grant cycle started in September 2023. We aim to support Native Hawaiian UH System students in developing skills and knowledge to explore and succeed in postsecondary education and positive employment outcomes within STEM pathways and careers.

About our project name and logo: Nā Hokua is Hawaiian for Vine Stems, a play on words alluding to new growth and the opportunities related to Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) careers. Our inclusion of A for ʻĀina honors Native Hawaiian values around resource stewardship at the intersection of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math. Our logo is inspired by the unfurling of two vines in a stylistic manner that alludes to wind and wave energies that drive our environment as well as the symbolism of the piko (navel) with its many cultural connotations.
