In this lesson, you will learn about the Mean Value Theorem.
Upon completion of the lesson 5.5, you will be able to:
Visually find the points that are guaranteed to exist by the Mean Value Theorem when given the graph of a function that satisfies the hypotheses of the Mean Value Theorem.
Determine whether the Mean Value Theorem applies to a given function on a given interval and if so, analytically find or approximate the point(s) that are guaranteed to exist by the Mean Value Theorem.
Use the Mean Value Theorem to show that two functions whose derivatives are equal differ by a constant.
Recognize that many graphing techniques are based on the Mean Value Theorem.

The following required readings cover the content for this module. As you go through each reading, pay close attention to the content that will help you learn the objectives for this module.
(Rolle's theorem and Mean Value Theorem with examples and solutions)
Proofs of Derivative Applications Facts/Formulas [Paul's Online Math Notes]
(proofs dealing with the first derivative and intervals of increase or decrease and with the second derivative and intervals of concavity) - Read Fact, the Shape of a Graph, Part 1 - Proof of 1, 2 and 3. - Read Fact, the Shape of a Graph, Part II - Proof of 1 and 2. - Read the Second Derivative Test - Proof of 1 and 2.
Note: Read the PowerPoint until the end of example 6.
Make your way through each of the practice exercises. This is where you will take what you have learned from the lesson content and lesson readings and apply it by solving practice problems.
