Chaminade University of Honolulu: Field and Lab Training (Limu)

Chaminade University of Honolulu: Limu Lab

Background Information

This research lab was created to give students the opportunity to learn what it takes to create their own research study, execute an experiment, and gain insight into the complexity of a field and lab technician.

The goal of this project is to keep an ongoing data log of limu and water quality of Ka`alawai while teaching students the skill they need to work in the fields of Oceanography, Marine Biology, and Psychology.

Careers most common with this type of work include positions with Land and Shoreline Management, Research in Psychology and Water Quality, and the Department of Health for Water Quality.

Student Intern Presentations and Reflections

Blaise Acosta

My contribution to this research study was to help take water samples, take pictures of limu, pick invasive limu and to bring some back to the lab where we did further experiments with them.

My overall experience while being there was really enjoyable because I thought that the things we did there was very fun and interesting to me. Also I really enjoyed making new friends and working together as a group.

Jada Lee

  1. I took limu samples from the beach to observe in the lab and picked invasive limu.

  2. I enjoyed getting experience working in a hands-on environment and meeting new people.

Star Ildefonso

During this study, I helped to survey and take samples of limu to observe in the lab. I also helped to pick invasive limu species to make room for native species to flourish.

I enjoyed being able to meet new people and get hands-on experience working in the lab and at the beach. It was a great way to gain knowledge and insight from a great Kumu!

Thomas Lynch

I'll do it tomorrow...

Mattson Wong

I learned how to do field research and use tools to test limu and ocean water.

Taylor Lindsey

  1. I contributed by getting data with the water probe.

  2. The whole internship was a great experience, being able to learn about the limu and the history of the place we worked at.

Aria Chang

  1. My contribution to this project was taking notes on data collected for my group.

  2. It was great and I learned a lot about the oceanography and marine science field.

Naka Endo

  1. My contribution to this project was helping to gather data of the different limu species at Kaʻalawai through the use of quadrants as well as water quality data using a water probe.

  2. Overall, this internship was amazing. It allowed me to gain fieldwork and laboratory experience, as well as learning the history of Kaimukī and Kaʻalawai.

Rei Fukuzawa

  1. I contribute by collecting limu samples and took picture and videos so it can be used in the reflections

  2. I loved that we were all able to go to the beach everyday and have fun while doing some work that are contributing to the restoration of Hawaiian lands.
