Graduate Hui Rebranding!

The Graduate Hui Ola Pono has created a new symbol to better represent itself. We chose ‘Ōhiʻa lehua (Metrosideros polymorpha) as a representation of leadership and resilience. It is the first plant to root itself and emerge through the ʻā pele (lava rock), breaking down the organic matter and establishing a surrounding forest. Similarly, a key principle of public health is to partner with communities to uplift and empower each other to create a thriving lāhui (nation).

The ʻŌhiʻa lehua also plays a critical role in Hawaiʻi’s unique and fragile ecosystem. ʻŌhiʻa trees are vital in maintaining our islands’ watersheds, providing a home for many native and endangered species, and supporting the vast biodiversity of our islands. We believe that the ʻŌhiʻa lehua represents connectedness and community as its growth in the forest is supported by a variety of neighboring plant and bird species, and its existence provides a space for a myriad of other flora and fauna to thrive in harmony with one another.
