Module 14: Learning Styles
Which way do you learn best?
How will knowledge of students learning styles help you as a classroom teacher?
Understand the importance of learning styles
Examine various learning styles and the role it plays in the classroom
Discuss approaches to teaching with a focus on three most common learning styles
There are three basic types of learning styles. The three most common are visual, auditory, and kinesthetic. To learn, we depend on our senses to process the information around us. Most people tend to use one of their senses more than the others. This week you will be taking a learning styles survey to determine how you learn best. You will also consider how information about your students' learning styles might help you as a future teacher in the classroom. It is important that we get to know our students and adjust our instruction according to the way they learn best so that they can grasp the concepts we want to teach. Below is an example of the 3 most common learning styles. How might you learn about the learning preferences of your future students?
Take the quick learning styles survey to determine how you learn best.
To gain a better understanding of yourself as a learner, you need to evaluate the way you prefer to learn or process information. By doing so, you will be able to develop strategies which will enhance your learning potential. The following evaluation is a short, quick way of assessing your learning style. No studies have validated this inventory. Its main benefit is to get you to think about yourself, to consider learning alternatives; not to rigidly classify you.
This survey focuses on three different learning styles to determine of the three, in which you are strongest.
2. Read the Table: Understanding and Identifying the Three Learning Styles and consider these questions below:
What does this table explain about learning styles?
Do you identify with one of the three styles more than the others?
How might this help you as a current student and as a future teacher?
3. View video clip and consider these questions:
What teaching strategies are in use?
How might you incorporate activities and strategies to reach all learners?
How do these teaching methods support different learning styles?
4. Course Evaluation:
Click on the link above and fill out the course evaluation by end of Module 15.
It is very important for me to find out what my students felt about the course, what was learned and how I might improve this for future students. Your opinions matter to me.
Whatʻs Due this Module:
Diverse Group Power Point
In this course, we have examined multiple ways of acknowledging the backgrounds of students and learning about who they are in order to teach them in an effective way. This module asks us to pay attention to how the students learn. If we know the learning styles of our students, we can be sure to adapt our teaching style to match. More importantly, if we differentiate our instruction so that we are teaching to all learning styles, we can be sure that we are reaching all of our learners.
