Provided functional behavioral assessment and treatment services to families and community care providers with youth with behavioral problems, such as noncompliance, physical aggression, temper tantrums, poor impulse control, self-injury (mild), disruptive behaviors, bedtime/sleep problems, toileting difficulties, fears/phobias and social skills deficits. Children served had varying levels of functioning, and included those with typical development as well as those with mild cognitive and/or speech impairments. Services were provided across clinic, home, school and other community settings as needed, and involved frequent collaboration with interdisciplinary teams.

Service approach entailed working with family and other external systems with which the child and family are involved, including school, social services, pediatrics and psychiatry. Patients served consisted of many family constellations and frequently presented with multiple stressors. Services were provided across clinic, home, school and other community settings as needed, and involved frequent collaboration with interdisciplinary teams.

Provide initial training and supervision to junior practicum students on treatment cases. Training involved demonstrating assessment protocols, including the use of semi-structured interviews and questionnaires, and instructing students about interview techniques, clinical formulation, and differential diagnosis. Training also entailed instructing students on specific cognitive-behavioral techniques used in treatment, the use of modular treatment manuals, repeated measurement of levels of functioning, and crisis management. Supervision included assisting with clinical formulations and treatment recommendations as part of the assessment process, treatment session planning, problem-solving issues in assessment and treatment, and assisting in the understanding of systemic barriers.

As part of a service contract with the State of Hawai‘i Department of Health, Child and Adolescent Mental Health Division, provided intensive evidence-based treatments to children across broad diagnostic categories associated with mood, behavioral, anxiety, and thought disorders. Children and adolescents receiving these services were placed into acute treatment (i.e., residential, hospital, etc.) settings or were in jeopardy of out of home placement due to the nature and severity of their mental health concerns. Services were delivered according to the needs of the child and family being served and included intensive home-based services. Duties also included collaboration with and supervision of school- and community-based paraprofessionals and organizations.

Outpatient assessment and therapy with children and adolescents referred to the program through the State of Hawai‘i Departments of Education and Health or through private channels. Conducted assessments with youth exhibiting difficulties across broad diagnostic categories using semi-structured interviews, collateral interviews, and parent, teacher, and self-report questionnaires, to inform case formulations and treatment recommendations. In collaboration with their guardians and schools, provided evidence-based treatments to children and adolescents, with primary diagnoses of anxiety, depressive, or oppositional disorders. Populations seen at the clinic for assessment and treatment spanned a variety of ethnic, cultural, and socioeconomic backgrounds, and reflected a variety of living situations. Collaborated with school and community treatment providers to develop appropriate and individualized services as part of a youth’s Individualized Education Plan.
