Module 17
Can art history be summed up in a nutshell? I don't think so. As we've seen (and in this course mostly of Western Art History) the title 'Artist' was invented only just before the Renaissance, with Giotto. This title was mostly given to men, and most often men who already had some status, connections, and patrons. These are the 'famous artists" from the past. Luckily people of all cultures, identities, and sexual orientations are now being seen and heard in our society. And thankfully art reflects that. So what about the other creative artists around the world? The ones who aren't in a museum, gallery, or print? They are you, and me, and us. We will continue to 'make' as humans because we have no choice, it's what we do. Whether it's a painting, a video, a bowl, a poem, or a bed, make it with all of your best effort. That is how you create more of you in the world. And more 'you-ness' is exactly what we all need. Be you. Be well, and Stay Creative.

The leading idea behind Carl's work is the power and diversity of the imagination. Through his use of narrative, myths, and allegories, he explores issues both personal and collective. Like many contemporary artists, he freely uses a variety of stylistic approaches. Can you identify some art historical qualities that we have touched on this semester? (Movements, artists etc)
